Euro 2016 qualifying draw

Post by northbank123 »

I know there's general antipathy towards international football so I'm prepared for tumbleweeds

24 teams so finishing top two gets you direct qualification and coming third play-offs (with best-placed third team qualifying directly). Home Nations' groups as follows:
Germany, Ireland, Poland, Scotland, Georgia, Gibraltar

Bosnia, Belgium, Israel, Wales, Cyprus, Andorra

Greece, Hungary, Romania, Finland, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands

England, Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino.
England's group sums up why international football is viewed so negatively. 10 games of which they will absolutely cruise through at least 7 or 8 of the games and can play at 10% capacity and still finish in the top 2 to qualify directly.

I would love to see Wales qualify for a major tournament in my lifetime but I always thought we would earn the right to be there and not simply be included because UEFA's greed has seen a completely unnecessary proliferation of their premier international tournament to make both club competitions.

The Slovenes have enough about them to beat us at their place.
The Swiss should get a goal against us.
Otherwise it looks utterly utterly devoid of interest.
Platini so far removed from the fans, 24 team tournament is absurd.

Yes I'm serious.... I mean that group looks utterly boring. 10 games over 18 months or so against Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino. Boring.

Not even a single interesting game to get your teeth into like Italy, Spain or Germany. Nothing. :(

It's all about the money - making sure the big teams make it to the £££ tournaments that get the sponsorship and give the UEFA & FIFA representatives 'incentives'.

Common sense would say that if this was a true festival of football that they'd separate out the minor nations like Faroe, Gibraltar etc the former soviet nations, into groups and have all the rest in 4 groups of 4.

That would be a lot more interesting for the major nations and help the minor nations develop their games more than a 12-0 thrashing by Germany ever will.

This now looks like an international version of the Europa League.

Good luck trying to fill Wembley for those matches

Good point Rob, another argument for playing games at st Mary's, reebok, etc

But it's about the money again innit.

Yeah also don't want to deal with the negative press which will inevitably arise if a stadium costing that much and taking that long to build isn't even used for its primary purpose.

I personally think Wembley was a monumental waste of money, especially given that when I went to the new ground for the first time against Chavs there seemed to have been no real regeneration of the area around it.

There has been a lot of work around the stadium; new hotels, a shopping mall, restaurants, flats etc.

But for me the key thing is that the fan priorities were scaled down.
The walk up to the stadium has uneven paving with poor drainage.
Wembley Park station was supposed to have the National Rail Chiltern line from Marylebone stopping at it, plus an attached bus station.
But funds were cut.

Boring draw, best way to generate interest is to take the national team on tour round the country for the qualifiers. Arrange high profile friendlies at wembley as i dont think a single qualifier will attract a sell out crowd.

Sorry Quartz regeneration was probably the wrong word to use. Although the area is still a dump I meant improving the area for fans - like somewhere to actually have a drink or something. Doesn't really make a difference to me if there's an IKEA nearby!
