Best moments of the drought
Too depressing on here of late. What are your favourite moments of the drought era? (ie 2006-present)
1. Arshavin goal against Barca winning 2-1
This was the best game I have ever seen of football. It was glorious and what a moment from one of my most favourite players of all time.

2. Lehman penalty save v Villareal (UEFA semi final)

(from 4:44)
3. Lassagne gate
Arsenal had to win and Spurs to not win on the final day of the season, to qualify for next years champs league.

Henrys injury time headed winner against United
Re: Best moments of the drought
Fabregas and Adebayor screamers against Spurs away, 3-1 in Sep 07 I think.
Generally anytime we have beaten that lot, but the one above and the 5-2 in Feb 12 where we were 2-0 down and they were giving it the mind the gap bollocks was particuarly satisfying.
I also have fond memories of the first season at the new stadium with the young team in the League Cup run (and a 6-2 home win against Blackburn stands out too), and genuinely believing the likes of Fabregas, van Persie, Clichy, Adebayor, Hleb et al would be the bedrock to a glorious future, never mind

Agreed - this one was probably my favorite because against Barca, we knew that we'd get destroyed in the return leg....Daycat wrote:Henrys injury time headed winner against United

Re: Best moments of the drought
Other than the CL campaign in 2006 this sadly consists of the odd game scattered here and there.
The 2006 CL run was brilliant. Winning at the Bernabeu was amazing, and the Juventus home game where we dominated them and Fabregas ran amok against Vieira was personally my favourite European night although obviously we had some great ones before my time. Villarreal game was very nervy but a great way for European football to leave Highbury and Lehmann's penalty save in the return was a great moment.
I was at both games when we beat Chelsea (1-0) and Spurs (2-1) in successive weekends before Christmas in 2007. They were both really gritty victories but massive (at the time). For once we actually stood up to a (very good) Chelsea team and the Spurs game we robbed 3 points, Keane had a great record with pens but Almunia's save from him at 1-1 felt like a defining moment. To be honest those games were arguably the last time when there didn't feel like there was some form of niggling caveat to our triumphs, it felt like we were good enough to win any competition.
One or two odd moments - coming from 2-0 down to dump Spurs out of the Beer Cup in 2007 (just couldn't beat us), Henry's return goal against Leeds, and as much as I dislike them and it's fashionable to revise opinions of how good they were I am glad I got to watch that Barcelona team in the 2-2 draw in 2010, they really were breathtaking during that first half.
I have obviously enjoyed various games every season but the memories are really diluted by 2006/07, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13 being write-offs with no trophy to play for come March and the feeble and humiliating nature of our two semi-final exits in 2008/09.

am i the only person to not enjoy that 4-4 game? great spectacle granted but flappy and the defence had me nearly smashing my tv up!Yankee_Gooner_Dandee wrote:>Fabregas goal against totnum, the solo run.

Re: Best moments of the drought
I remember when cesc scored against the scum within a minute of us scoring and straight from their kick off - I was in the upper tier that day and I swore the whole stand shook when the every Gooner danced in celebration
I remember when ginger scholes was walking from the centre circle to take his penalty in the cup final in Cardiff, and the Gooners chanted U S A louder than they had at any point that day and I just knew that he would miss it
The euphoria of robbing them that day (we were totally outclassed) made up slightly for getting robbed by the scousers in the cup final.

At the time it was frustrating, but looking back at it it was fucking classic.BournemouthRED wrote:am i the only person to not enjoy that 4-4 game? great spectacle granted but flappy and the defence had me nearly smashing my tv up!Yankee_Gooner_Dandee wrote:>Fabregas goal against totnum, the solo run.

Re: Best moments of the drought
Wining away at The San Siro to knock out AC Milan in 2008 when they were European Champions.
Winning away at Old Toilet in 2006 after missing a penalty.
Beating the scum in the league cup semi final second leg in 2007.
Winning away at Chavsea in 2008 after being a goal down.
Someone in our end letting a flare off at chavsea the following year.
Going 1-0 up in the league cup final in 2007 with Walcott's first Arsenal goal and thinking that we'd win.
Funny how I can't think of any decent memories from the last 4 years or so. Sums up how utterly shit and turgid that time has been and how even after decent results, I haven't had the feeling that it would lead to anything worthwhile.

Re: Best moments of the drought
after watching mata score an equaliser in the dying moments at the br*dge, only for that chav *word censored* to fall over and gift us the winner- not only that but almost dying of a heart attack when chelsea came forward for a last attack- only for us to break away and finish it is a memory I'll have for a while. the away end that day was in fucking carnival atmosphere for the rest of the day, we were going mental and random strangers were hugging each other and we couldn't believe such a shit team had beaten our bogey team in that manner.
I'll be honest, only this season's cup run has actually made me feel positive that we could get to wembley again, the way the whole ground felt such relief and pride when we beat liverpool was something I've never seen at the bowl, it almost felt like home, for the first time ever.

Re: Best moments of the drought
Strange but numbers 1 and 5 don't do it for me at all. We lost to Barca over 2 legs so that night, whilst a decent match, will always be associated ultimately with defeat in my mind. Henry coming back against Leeds - meh. I see that as us signing an ex-legend back on a free transfer scoring a goal against an average Championship sidespendsum4uckingmoney wrote:Too depressing on here of late. Lasagne gate will forever be in the memory though as will all of the run to the 2006 CL final including Villareal and Real Madrid. The 2-0 win in the San Siro before Wenger trod on the same rake for a second time and let another team fall apart too soon was also a great night.

Re: Best moments of the drought
The only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is the shoot-out win at Roma in March 2009 en route to the semi-finals. Didn't mean a great deal in the grand scheme of things, but was a very tense night, and the shoot-out went on forever - about 15 minutes, I think. Pretty epic night.
