what makes a challenge

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

what makes a challenge

Post by phil_mitchell »

Liverpool's victory today means we can no longer win the league - we were mathematically still 'in it' with 4 games to go. we all want to see us challenge for the league, but what constitutes challenging? I would be satisfied for next season to go into the last 2 games still in it. i would call that progress - what you reckon??

A team that concedes 20 goals in 4 away games were never challengers. Just as a team who failed to score against the worst United side in 20 years isn't a challenger. Fuck what the league table said at the start of February or the fact we could mathematically do it before today......challenging for me means being able to beat the top teams in the league. Some sad cock will no doubt produce a statistic that once upon a bluemoon someone won it without beating any of the other top 4 teams but it will always be the exception.

Beat Chelsea, United or City and then be in the hunt with 4 or 5 games left and I'll believe we're challengers. Inspector Clueless is incapable of delivering that though

1. Win your home matches against the rest of the top 4/5. At least threaten to draw away.

2. Finishing no more than 6 points off the champions.

3. Inspire a majority of your supporters into believing you can actually win it through effort and minimal mental mistakes.

4. Have a manager who displays evidence of the tactical flexibility and creativity as well as a strong desire to win the title, particularly on the touchline

I reckon as long as we show great mental strength and only lose in special circumstances then I believe we are competing :rubchin:

Forget all the analysis of performances against particular teams. I know you're not really gonna win the league if you can't win big games, but fundamentally a challenge is about being in with a strong shout of winning the league come April, whoever the points have come against.

Impossible to define exactly but as a rough measure I say it is being within six points of the leaders with 12 games to go.
