The Invincibles: 10 years on

The Invincibles: 10 years on

Post by VAVAVOOM 14 »

10 years ago today, men became Gods and immortalized the club for all eternity.

Don't really have much to say...They were a virtually perfect team and played the best football I've ever seen - be it club or country.

Just thought this anniversary deserved to be commentated. It's fitting that we recall this incredible feat just two days before we head into a cup final - hopefully our current players can draw inspiration from it and summon the spirit of The Invincibles.

Mad Jens made a great save away at Fulham (I think) right at the end of the season, very late on in the game that kept the run going. Can't remember too much about that season considering the amount of alcohol comsumed :barscarf:

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

Okay, this years team at least showed that we are moving in the right direction, but they're a million miles away from being a true prospect.

We'll never see the likes of that team again! Gods, each and every one of them!

"Drew too many games" according to the rather bitter Ferg at the time

Absolutely wonderful side - and we can remember when we all loved Wenger too, happy times. :barscarf:

That team had a real steely determination and unity that would blow this team away - yes the difference in class is obvious too, but those guys had guts (at least domestically) and were well capable of rolling up their sleeves when needed to.

Vavavoom, it is more likely that the memories of that team will inhibit our current team rather than inspire them

What a team that was...I remember a fellow Gooner saying at the time that we couldn't appreciate that team enough at the time because we were living it but in years to come we would. We all want Arsenal to win a Champions League but it is my belief that when that team didn't win one we never will. It may sound or look stupid to say this but ten and eight years later I am still convinced we were nearer to winning the Champions League in 2004 than 2006 even though in 06 we got to the final.

I have to agree mate, I still find it hard to believe how we went out then. Looking at what was left in the competition . . . . oh, what might have been.

My favourite moment was away at Chelsea, 1-0 down, and then Vieira and Edu came up with the goals to win it showed the bottle that was in the team. Can you imagine our current side going 1-0 down away at one of the big boys, and coming back and winning, very unlikely.

spot on, its so sad to know that we have seen the best ever arsneal team and we will never reach those heights again. i dont think any of us can appreciate how good we were at the time, but as you say in hindsight we realise just how good we were.

likewise the CL, i was thinking this the other day. that team couldnt win it, i dont see any prospect of arsenal ever winning it now. that said maybe the current malaise is making us overly gloomy for the long term future and we could reach those levles again some day

2004 , the greatest Arsenal team in the history of the club.

I actually said at the time, the same as an earlier poster, enjoy this because its as good as it gets. When you hit the pinnacle in your sport like we did in 2004, there is only one way and that's down.

i remember them being blinding fast, seemed like every transition to us sparked a counter attack and every time we had the ball in an opponents half we were only 2-3 passes from a goal! exciting to watch, although being 20 back in 04' i definately took it for granted.

If I recall correctly the Fulham away was the penultimate game and they were wearing their next season's light blue away kit. Think Reyes tackled van der Sar and scored early on and it petered out to a 1-0. Remember a superb save he made in a draw at Bolton in the middle of the season and think we drew at Pompey late on in the season, might have been that game?

Still a mystery to me how that team never came close to winning the Champions League. I heard someone the other day saying that the main reason was because we stuck to a relative 4-4-2, whereas most European sides were already on the 4-5-1 that we all know and love/hate today - and therefore, we kept getting overrun in midfield.

I don't know about that, but I remember that defeat in Ukraine, that draw in Moscow. Forget the quarter final; we were ropey in Europe even during the group stage and only barely got out of it. I don't know what it was that made us so crap in Europe. Maybe we played little bit with the handbrake on? :rubchin:
