Met Police want to change the time of derbies.

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Met Police want to change the time of derbies.

Post by UlsterGooner »

MPS has made applied to @IslingtonBC to revoke or amend the Arsenal FC safety certificate for two local derby games at 5.30 pm on Saturday

From their twitter account

A lot of people will have booked their travel now for this, would be a disgrace if it was changed

Don't know. Can't see what the problem is, they had a NLD last year at half 5 and there wasn't many problems

They are apparently pushing for a 12 noon kick off on Saturday

Was amazed that they were at 5.30pm in the first place. They're historically been at 12.45pm, so I'm not sure why that's changed this season. Travel plans aside, I do agree that they should be moved forward in the day.

I thought the whole reason it took so long for TV fixtures to be announced after the schedule was released was so that all of this sort of stuff could get agreed with the relevant authorities. I live in London so has no personal impact on me but it will be disgraceful if they do make changes given the number of people that make travel plans as soon as these things are announced.

If the game is still on Saturday, then I'll still be able to make it but would have been able to get home as I only booked a night stay on the basis that it was a half 5 kick off and there would be no flight back to Belfast/Dublin

Apparently the Police Officers who have the 'Freebie Tickets' from Arsenal FC because of their 'Close Relationship' (as exposed by The Daily Mail & Islington Gazette this week) told their wives, who insisted that the boys in blue were back in time for their dinner to be served at 6pm. Of course this being the case John Beattie & Co (Emirates Stadium Management) agreed to alter the times of the games!!!!!!! They like to do as they are TOLD by the Local Constabulary. #J4TA1

Understandable that they don't want them kicking off at 5.30pm, they could have chosen any other slot and it would have been fine. Obviously the issue arising after fixtures have been announced is a farce.

Hosting the FA Cup game at 5.30 last year undermines the argument slightly as that passed without trouble but I wouldn't bank on that happening every time.

Is it just the Spurs game they're on about or potentially other 'derbies' too?

at least they won't move it to 11am like they did for numerous derbies in the mid eighties.

You can see why the police want a lunch time ko. Less drinking time equals less trouble. But as someone else said, last years derby passed with no incident even though the spuds had an increased cup allocation.

For a derby Saturday evening produces the best atmosphere and given there are two major satellite channels vying for prime slots, the police probably wont have as much influence as they did in the past. If there is already a lunch time ko, I can imagine one of the broadcasters having a hissy fit over competing with the NLD.

It would be more of a problem if BT had the 5.30 Saturday slot, because you would effectively be telling them they can't pick up the game. As it is if they have the rights it will be for 12.45 Saturday (presuming same as last year), Sky could choose either 2pm or 4pm Sunday or Monday night.
