Very harsh - Gibbs has been one of our best players this season IMO.VAVAVOOM 14 wrote: Add Gibbs to that list.

Re: Danny Welbeck Signs (dont moan)
I agree with this, Gibbs is over rated and injury prone also, he maybe good going forward although his crossing is shit but in the first place I would like my defenders to actually defend and Gibbs just doesn't do this imo!barnetgooner wrote:Very harsh - Gibbs has been one of our best players this season IMO.VAVAVOOM 14 wrote: Add Gibbs to that list.
Re: Danny Welbeck Signs (dont moan)
Totally disagree, Gibbs is the best left back in the country (imo)...yes better than Baines and Shaw. He's played at the top level in club football his entire career. The system wenger plays has our full backs going forward rather than defending, however, he rarely lets us down in his defending. Our weakness has been on the right in Debuchy's absence. Chambers has done well but he's been ripped apart on occasions by pacey skilful wingers, Gibbs on the other hand hasn't. I can't think of a left back I'd rather have in our team.franksav63 wrote:I agree with this, Gibbs is over rated and injury prone also, he maybe good going forward although his crossing is shit but in the first place I would like my defenders to actually defend and Gibbs just doesn't do this imo!barnetgooner wrote:Very harsh - Gibbs has been one of our best players this season IMO.VAVAVOOM 14 wrote: Add Gibbs to that list.

Well, he's one of the best players in our squad and has been our best defender for a while now , so no.VAVAVOOM 14 wrote:Add Gibbs to that list.falkirk goon wrote:WwStuartL wrote:Unfortunately, the same can be said for Flamini, Arteta, Monreal, Mertasacker, + Sczeczney at least.Yankee_Gooner_Dandee wrote:he's good enough as a squad player but should never be starting every game like he does now. at least not for a team that (should) have title aspirations.
I concur, our squad contains a large pecentage of overpaid average shite.
maybe we can add an even more undeserving player to the list...sanchez?

Re: Danny Welbeck Signs (dont moan)
IMHO Gibbs is a good defender on his day, a very average one on many other days. He's not the best LB in the PL, nowhere near it. Admittedly our "system" (for what it is) puts extra pressure on him to get forward but that's quite common in modern football. Gibbs' problem is he often gets caught wrong side when defending. He doesn't read the game well. Still, when he's not injured he is a good defender, just not great.
But if we accept that a big part of his job as an LB is getting forward and getting crosses in then he is shockingly shite at that vital part of the game. He is simply the worst crosser of a ball I've ever seen in over 40 years of watching football.
I wouldn't be devastated if we replaced him tbh.

Think one Of Gibbs' biggest problems is when the opposition is not attacking on his side. He tends to go towards the ball, be it in the centre or opposite side, leaving an acre of room behind him. As left backs go in the Premier League he is ok.

I don't have any issues with Gibbs other than he's made of glass.

Foreign? Kolarov, Aspelacuta (spelling??)barnetgooner wrote:Name a better left back in the PL thenfranksav63 wrote: I agree with this, Gibbs is over rated and injury prone also, he maybe good going forward although his crossing is shit but in the first place I would like my defenders to actually defend and Gibbs just doesn't do this imo!
and (English) on today's showing Bertrand!
The main issue with the glass ankled Gibbs is that he lets the player he marks get the cross in too easily every time, which for a left back is the main objective in stopping! Imo all the current English left backs aren't up to much, very average!!

Re: Danny Welbeck Signs (dont moan)
Gibbs is okay. There are better players out there but he's solid enough and certainly not one of our main worries.
He is disappointingly wasteful going forward. I'm pretty old school in that I think that defending is a more important asset for a full-back than attacking, and the league is packed full of Kyle Walkers and Luke Shaws who bomb forward and are somehow rated as good attacking full-backs despite having zero end product, and Gibbs is generally okay at defending. He gets into good positions going forward but just doesn't know what to do and ends up fluffing it.
For what it's worth I rate Azpilicueta.

Seriously ?? Baines pisses all over gibbs for certain and then there is a load of left backs listed above, that are at least as good and some better than gibbs

Kolarov.
At least we'd have someone who understands a fucking set-piece.
Ditto Baines.

Re: Danny Welbeck Signs (dont moan)
Baines is so overrated; never played in the Champions League and was totally shown up in the World Cup in the summer. Yes he can take free kicks and corners but as a defender nothing special. Azpilicueta is a decent player but is not even left footed. Kolarov is arguably better than Gibbs but Clichy still gets plenty of games so he can't be all that.augie wrote:

Our worst starting LB in 30 years?! Can't see how anyone can argue Gibbs is worse than Clichy - GC made constant costly howlers which I can't remember Gibbs doing, plus Gibbs gets a few goals while Clichy couldn't shoot to save his life.
I would much rather have Winterburn or Cole but LB just isn't a priority at the moment - GK, centre back, centre mid and striker are much bigger problem positions.

I'm glad we've cleared up the left back thing.
