Watch the Man United v Arsenal game from October 2004 and then ask how the referee from that day could be in charge of Premier League referees today.

I still feel angry every day about this total stitch upBradywasking wrote:Watch the Man United v Arsenal game from October 2004 and then ask how the referee from that day could be in charge of Premier League referees today.

We should have gone fifty games without defeat. Riley was a last minute replacement for a non corrupt referee.

PGMOL claim that, in fact, the accuracy of refereeing decisions is up from 94% to 95%. I've never read anything so ridiculous in my life
It's a tough job but some of the decisions last weekend alone were appalling. The Routledge red card, the Liverpool penalty for the handball that hit the bloke in the face, not giving a penalty for Smallings blatant starfish handball five yards in front of the red and not sending off the Southampton player for hacking down Sanchez when obviously clean through on goal. All completely unjustifiable and not mitigated by the 'blink of an eye', obscured view, interpretation or indeed any other argument. All black and white and all terrible.

About time someone had a go at these incompetent fools. They are now professionals so only have to do one job- run up and down a pitch and look. It's a fucking joke how bad some of them are and cowardly they are. In no other paid job could you make so many pathetic mistakes and then claim it is hard because you couldn't see properly or that it happened too quickly. Make these mugs come out and face the music if they make mistakes and explain their decisions. Mike Riley is a prick.

To be honest there aren't many who can be called competent amongst the lot of them, and the fact that they can't be criticised by Managers or Players without fines and bans being levied says it all really.
Riley is the most corrupt
ever to pull on a Black Shirt since a bloke called Mosley in the 30's
Riley is the most corrupt

Some ref's just seem so bent it's unreal. Not really understanding why we can't have the fourth official watching the game on a monitor to assist the ref's who clearly have no clue.
Sounds familiar...

Re: Bad refereeing/ call for Mike fucking Riley to stand dow
I remember when everyone was calling for 'professional referees' to be the answer to all our problems, being a voice of caution
If anything the age of the professional referee has created some of the biggest egos around - Poll, Webb, Dowd to name but a few. Next there are so many interpretations of the rules these days there will never be consistency - were the studs raised, was there intent, was the player interfering with the goalkeeper's line of sight when in an offside position, first phase / second phase, was it simulation etc. Every year there are new directives for bookings and sending-offs, yet every week there are different views on how these should be interpreted....so my only sympathy is that I think its a harder job than ever.
How on earth it took till this year to implement goal line technology is unforgiveable, and whilst I don't want football becoming like that NFL shit and other 'technical' sports there is a definite need for penalty incidents to be reviewed. The handball against Leicester when the ball struck the defender in the face for example - the ref made the call, the game had stopped and it would have taken all of 30 seconds to see that a mistake had been made. What is wrong with that?
Oh....and Mike Riley is a c u n t of the highest order. Just thought I'd mention that

Steve O is right- its a very difficult job.
Its not helped at all by the cheating that goes on most matches now, diving falling over, getting opponents sent off, shirt pulling. All this can be dealt with by retrospective fines/ bans.
Agree pen decisions and sending offs could be reviewed at the time.
Sorry to say but Cricket and Rugby have moved on apace compared to football. You can even buy a headphone that allows you to hear the refs conversation in rugby.
Having a fair splattering of former players as ref also helps those sports a lot as well.

What I will also say is that the treatment of young referees at grass roots level is appalling. A couple of seasons ago my lad was involved in an under-13s game, where the ref must have only been 16 or 17 I'm guessing. The game saw two sendings off, numerous bookings and some of the most shameful behaviour from players, parents and the managers / coaches I have ever seen at that level / age. The poor lad was getting some serious shit - being called a cheat and every name under the sun. All that for £20 ?
Anyway, I thought he had a cracking game and I doubt one 'expert' on the sideline could have handled it any better, so I shook his hand afterwards and told him so and to keep with it, and hoped he progressed. That was after both sets of coaches had been ranting and telling him how he'd be marked down and was going to be reported to the FA etc.
I moved my lad out of that team after that season. Parents and managers are supposed to sign a respect charter each season but in certain leagues I see little evidence of it being in place. We need to encourage youngsters to take up reffing because lets face it....without them we are fucked as a sport
When I see professionals abusing refs it gets on my tits and I still think the respect angle needs to be worked harder. Clowns like There's Only One and Maureen bollocking the 4th official at every opportunity hardly helps either
Respect the refs, give them the technology and tools to do the job, be clear on the interpretation of the laws and after that we'll see if things progress for the better

Pl refs are not very good, but, imo, the 'blind' managers and cheating players get the refs they deserve. It's us that suffer.
Rugby (both codes) is a fast-paced, complicated game but there is respect for the ref and sensible use of video playback. games are not unduly delayed. Replays and retrospective action would improve behaviour in short order.
