Previous Arsenal v West Ham matches (Highbury / Emirates)

Post by StuartL »

Several happy memories of matches at home v the hammers but also a couple of defeats in the mix too.

Apparently, they were the last away team to win at Highbury (was it the 1-0 when we massacred them but couldn't score) and also the first away team to win at the Emirates.

Recall Adebayor scoring from an impossible angle, which was particularly sweet as I had my (now ex) brother-in-law with me.

Also last season's turn around was quite good after going a goal down to win 3-1, including a stunning Giroud goal (possibly his best for us ?)

Highlights from the previous year include BFP turning his back on the Wham shot and Wenker doing up his zip, a Podolski screamer + 3 assists

Also found a Sylvain Wiltord hat trick at Highbury

Your recollections of bygone matches please gentlemen (and ladies, if there are any left on here.....whatever happened to the babestation bird ? )

Think the last game against them at Highbury finished 2-3, that was the night Sol went AWOL at halftime. I remember a 6-1 in 1976 when Alan Ball scored a ridiculously early goal , previous season they beat us 2-0 at Highbury in a FA Cup quarter final on a mud bath of a pitch.

Remember an absolute madness of a match in March 2010. Vermalean sent off in the first half, Almunia saving the corresponding penalty and then Cesc scoring from 12 yards himself late on.

And oh yeah, we went top that night too.

Remember losing to them in the FA Cup in 88-89 season in a replay, think Rosenior scored for them. Was a packed north bank that evening if I remember rightly

One of my earliest memories was from around 83/84. Don't remember anything about the game, but do remember their firm attacking the queue outside Arsenal Underground. I was only about 14. Jumped over a wall into a front garden and was then punched in the head. Oh the good old days!

Very very vague memories of a 1975 FA cup loss, mainly as of course we won in 71 just lost in 72, semi 73 ( ) so I just expected us to continue the trend, being in my early teens. I didn't see it live though.

Imagine a PL pitch playing like this these day

Match v us at Highbury starts about 0.16, some footage of terrace surges familiar to older fans but will interest younger supporters on here at .23 and .52.

I do remember another match similar where the rain was so terrible that no one could stand in the low front terrace on the West stand (Was it?) except for a few hard men who enjoyed running up and down following the ball the whole match. It really wasn't possible to play the ball on the ground, it just stuck there. Only goal was a header from Macdonald into his own net from a punch by Pat Jennings onto Macdonalds head. Only "goal" I ever saw him score live when playing for us

Glad no ones mentioned Wembley 1980 :banghead: :banghead:

Sorry rambled off on a tangent it certainly wasn't v West Ham, could well have been Villa or possibly WBA. Grizzly match   Suppose if it was Villa it was the same strip but IIRC the shirts were all brown with mud before the end of the match

One of my first matches was against them. Was the game just before the Cup Winners Cup Final of 1994. Bright sunny day at Highbury and pretty sure they had the whole clock end for some reason and making a racket throughout. We lost 2-0 with our minds obviously focused elsewhere.

Remember our first defeat at the new ground. Robert Green played like a man possessed that day, we had something like 25 shots on goal and lost 1-0.

These plebs were the last ever team to beat us at Highbury. Crunts.

The worst ones I can remember being at was losing at home to them 1-0 in the FA Cup when Leroy Rosenior scored a header at the Clock End and having to listen to it for years from the odd Shammers fans I knew back then.....must have been 88 or 89 I reckon, possibly earlier. Also seeing Campbell's first half debacle when Nigel Mediocre and his chums came and gave us a beating at THOF in our last season there.

Plenty of decent ones to shout about though - being 4-0 up at half time and singing "We've got Dennis Bergkamp....you've got Ian Dowie" at the Clock End. Think Fatty Frank was playing for them back then. Too many others to remember - we normally do alright against these clowns

It was 89 after a 2-2 draw at their place where if memory serves we came back from 2-0 down . Liam Brady played for them in first game and probably replay. More to the point Steve the following May Arsenal went to Anfield and done something special while our friends from Jurassic Park went down to Division 2.

Yep, a 2-0 win at Anfield which was needed because the Shammers rolled over and died shipping 5 against the Mickeys the week before. As I've said elsewhere the only forgiveness I have for them is that final day of the 2005/06 season, where they dicked the Spuds despite the fact that they had nothing to play for and were in the FA Cup Final the following weekend - some respect to them for that
