Sloe Bar/Cafe,Euston Station

Went to the game against the Chavs yesterday with a mate,(Richard),who I have been going to Arsenal with for 15+ years. After the game,(and a quick post match beer in the Arsenal Tavern), we headed back to Euston. We got there about 7.30pm,(to get the 20.00 to Rugby),but found it was delayed by 20 minutes or so. Richard then spotted this bar on the station concourse and suggested a beer while we waited for the train.
As it was my round I approached the barmaid and said, "Two pints of Heineken please." She replied, "I am sorry, I can't serve you because you are football hooligans." I add at this point we were not wearing Arsenal shirts, but fairly subtle Arsenal jackets,obviously with the club badge on. Also, we were neither pissed, loud or abusive, (in fact a lady behind us also shook her head in incredulity at her refusal to serve us.
At this point Richard said, "Forget it mate, we'll just get a beer on the train," and we left and went back to the departure boards. We were there, talking about what had just happened when a bloke behind us said,"Couldn't help overhearing what you were talking about," and proceeded to tell us that he is a regular traveller between Birmingham and Euston,and has used the Sloe Bar on several occasions. He informed us that not only do they regularly refuse to serve football supporters,(or Hooligans as they call them), but he has also witnessed them refusing to serve members of the Armed Services because they were in uniform.
Far be it for me to venture an opinion as to whether people should avoid this establishment, but Richard, myself and family and friends will never try to use the place again.

That's despicable. Head to the Euston Tap if you ever face the same need again. Many Arsenal supporters who come in by train drink there before/after.

Strangely enough there isn't any legislation which categorises football supporters as a protected group....

We usually use The Doric at Euston, and we also used to use The Britannia,(now closed), we just thought that this place was handy as we had half an hour or so to wait.

You should of gone to the Euston Flyer just down the road, decent boozer which often shows live football and the female bar staff seem nice

As fucking ridiculous as the situation you describe is, in common law a licensee of a licensed premises can refuse to serve anyone and they don't even need to give a reason. I have refused service to known hookers and pikeys in my previous career but I would never, ever give a reason (drugs/soliciting/fights) so as to avoid the possibility of contradiction later on down the line.

I should add I haven't held a liquor license for over ten years and I haven't heard of it being practiced by general staff though, they would normally refer to their super for guidance.

To be honest mate I wouldn't even bother complaining, just take your hard-earned elsewhere.

I'm sure that in Ireland you now have, if requested, to give a reason for refusal to serve alcohol. There was an unwritten rule among publicans on serving the traveling community for example(most wouldn't serve them) . New laws were introduced to stop that "discrimination". To me a publican who is 100% certain an individual or group is trouble they should have the discretion to say no. But the potential trouble makers can cry discrimination and the publican is in trouble.
Back to Rugby Gooner's story..disgraceful attitude by the bar staff or more to the point the Pub's policy. Firstly the only people who drink in station bars are those waiting for trains. So no one is going to do a marathon session there. Secondly the train companies clean up on match days and by extension the station facilities benefit also. Alcohol is available on trains which is more confined than a station bar but most of all in 2015 to brand anyone as being something because they wear football colours is a disgrace ,the kind of attitude that created the hostile attitude of a nation to football fans three decades ago.

Glad you bought this up. Had a similar problem after the Everton game this season. The manageress refused to serve us because our 'colours' . Lets just say a few verbals were exchanged.

More like martin* Freeman But the point still stands. Plenty of better bars around there though so just avoid it.
