If You Could Choose CL or Prem Title
If you could choose Either the CL money maker cup OR The Prem Title This Season - which would you want THE Arsenal to Win?
Forget the FA Cup there's No Whaaaaay we're gonna do the treble - and the league cup has got manure written all over it..
so:
1. CL Winners
Or
2. Prem Champions
Yes, yes, yes I know neither's gonna happen while Clueless is in charge...But...what if YOU could choose?
And none of this - why bother we are never gonna win anything other than the FA Cup or League Cup under Clueless....that's a given...BUT....

Re: If You Could Choose CL or Prem Title
I went for CL, I understand why many supporters dislike what it has become but winning it would in theory be a better scenario for our long term standing in the world game than winning the league i.e. more attractive to top players etc. Plus although winning the league is the biggest sign of consistency, winning a final normally provide a better magical moment to savour (unless we end up with another Anfield 89 scenario!)
Re: If You Could Choose CL or Prem Title
Being in my 50s i want to see us win the CL before i die and then the World Club Championship. Whilst i can't see it happening i remember going to see us in the mid 80s and i never thought we would ever win anything again so hope springs eternal.

Premier League every day of the week for me
Being old school I feel that only the domestic league winners should be in the champs league anyway, but how can a team call itself kings of europe if they aint even kings of their own league ?

the champions league. if we are ever to gain the respect that a top european club should receive, we need to win the biggest prize in football.
Re: If You Could Choose CL or Prem Title
Easy.
European Cup all day long. It's the one major black mark on the history of The Arsenal.
1 European cup is a huge upgrade on 0... whereas 14 isn't a huge upgrade on 13 league titles. It's a no brainer.
I find that really really strange. You'd rather we won the league for a 14th time ahead of the European Cup for the fIrst time EVER because you're not happy about the way we qualified
The European Cup is the greatest achievement in club football and we've never won it.
I'm amazed we all don't see that as THE trophy we need to win yet 4 so far have voted that they'd rather we won the Premier League

You'd choose the league over the European Cup because of a technicality?augie wrote:Premier League every day of the week for meBeing old school I feel that only the domestic league winners should be in the champs league anyway, but how can a team call itself kings of europe if they aint even kings of their own league ?

I read the thread title and decided what I would write only to find Augie is in my head and beat me to it, word for word (except I wouldn't have used "aint"!)augie wrote:Premier League every day of the week for meBeing old school I feel that only the domestic league winners should be in the champs league anyway, but how can a team call itself kings of europe if they aint even kings of their own league ?

Why ?? We (and by we I mean the majority on here) spend so much time and energy on here slating the champions league, and yet we are now supposed to believe that it really is THE pinnicle of our world ?

Listen I get the fact that it's absence on our honours list is a sore point, and in an ideal world I too would want to win it, but the question asked which would be the priority for each of us and the league has always been my preferred target even when it was the old European cup. The fact that the chavs became the first London club to win it has also devalued it in my eyes cos that is an honour that would have made it more special to me. Winning our own domestic league allows us to smile at the fans of all the other clubs that we work with, are friends with, are related to etc and that is more important to me.
In the past 10 years the victims have won the champs league once but haven't won their domestic league at all - would they be viewed in higher esteem than we are ? It didn't alter the direction of their club and it didn't make them into a top club either domestically or in Europe and for me it is easier to build a dominant club on the back of domestic league success, than it is after winning a champs league
I know that I am viewed as somewhat controversial sometimes, but I really don't see the controversy in my choice

Re: If You Could Choose CL or Prem Title
I feel like I've entered some sort of parallel universe where all logic has turned upside down. A world where apples are now called oranges, dogs are called cats and the European cup is no longer considered the pinnacle of club football.augie wrote:We (and by we I mean the majority on here) spend so much time and energy on here slating the champions league, and yet we are now supposed to believe that it really is THE pinnicle of our world ?More than a small bit of hypocrisy methinks
And this talk of hypocrisy? - it's nonsense. Most people (perhaps not you) criticise the CL because it's bloated, drawn out, too financially driven and a trophy we've had 19 cracks at and appear to be getting worse

We've won the league 13 times. We've done it unbeaten, we've won it 3 years in a row, we've won it at Anfield, Old Trafford and WHL (twice

But for all our domestic glory, we've never done it on the biggest stage of all. We've never gone toe to toe with the great clubs of world football and come out on top ahead of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Man Utd and the other clubs whose soul is intrinsically linked with ol' big ears (not Gary Lineker

To suggest that's not the pinnacle of club football is sacrilege.
Chelsea have devalued the european cup? - I pity you and your tortured soulaugie wrote:The fact that the chavs became the first London club to win it has also devalued it in my eyes cos that is an honour that would have made it more special to me.

You'll like this quote from Hitchikers Guide; it's right up your street.
Marvin: "The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million: they were the worst, too. The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that, I went into a bit of a decline."
