Historically Wenker has used the excuse that clubs do not want to sell in January to not buy what has been required but I have been thinking about previous January windows when we have managed to find signings of top, top, quality.
Reyes - signed in 2004, he scored on his debut, twice v Chelsea and became a crucial component to our 2004 invincible team.
Arshavin - Was at the time our record signing, a truly talented player who was criminally miss-used, scored 4 goals at Anfield but was left out of a cup semi final to show the team weren't reliant on him..........which we lost. He then lost heart and returned to Russia.
Eboue - best remembered for diving and getting the free kick from which Sol scored our Champions League goal.
Sol - was re-signed on a free in January, when we were desperate for defenders.
Adebayor - a bit of an unknown quantity, plucked from Monaco after a couple of season attempting to learn the offside rule we flogged him for £25m so a great bit of business.
Kallstrom - who can forget the impact this guy made, becoming a mainstay in the treatment room with a broken back ffs, which he had before we signed him. Did score a pelanty in the shoot out semi v Wigan, so maybe we could forgive him ( but not Wenker)
Some players still at the club
Theo - signed from Southampton in Jan 2006, but didn't make his debut till the following season, now an integral part of the team, with injuries preventing him from
Monreal - signed in 2013 and initially seen as a squad player and perhaps not of sufficient quality but he has been so consistent over the last 2 seasons that he has endeared himself to fans and justified his selection.
Paulista - has stepped into the side this season with good effect, could still have a major role to play this season.
Beiliek - young midfielder signed for £2.5 m but yet to be deemed worthy of the first team.
Any that others can recall ?
So there are players out there, Wenker has signed plenty, no excuses - boost the squad and win this league.
Previous January Transfers
Re: Previous January Transfers
Good post. I agree totally that Arshavin was criminally misused by The Old Fraud. It boils my piss to this very day
Sol did a job for us second time around, in the dark days of Project Youth. I wish we had kept him for another season then got him onto our coaching staff. Unfortunately we have TOF as our manager so that didn't happen, instead Sol ended up in semi-retirement at Newcastle and now only speaks out to play the race card, be a WUM and a bit of a cock.
Kallstrom should have been a good signing (and an FM legend to boot
). The absolute farce was signing him when knowing he was injured then he duly broke down for a couple of months. Says it all about TOF's/the club's tin-pot mentality. Then when Kallstrom was finally fit, we hardly used him. He mostly did well for us when allowed. We should have signed him on a permanent deal as we could do with an experienced head in the centre of the park, effectively replacing Arteta. With Coquelin out, Kallstrom would have been in the team now, but for TOF's ageism toward experienced players.
Monreal has proved to be a good signing. He has improved massively since he joined us and has taken Glass Legs Gibbs' place in the side on merit. An unsung hero.
Gabriel is mostly solid. I'd like to see him come on as a player and become our Keown, but I am concerned about the language issues. I heard he could barely learn Spanish in the seventeen months he was there (and that's from his native language of Portuguese), so fuck knows how he's going to learn English.
Beilik another signing for the youth team dressed up as a significant signing as part of club propaganda. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Wisła Kraków Reserves after a few token League Cup appearances for us, or ending up a journeyman around eastern Europe.
Out of all those, arguably only Arshavin had the brilliance to be capable of dragging a team to league title (Adebayor had the talent, but a shit attitude), the rest of them are workers - if only we had a Tony Adams at the club to marshal them and turn them into winners...
Anyway, I'm fucking shocked you left the BEST January signing of them all out of your list. I am of course talking about...
