Media Bias
Media Bias
have listened and read to most media over the years, and wonder why most of them are very biased against the Gunners. It's one thing we can rubbish their performance, but why does the media hate Arsenal so much?

Re: Media Bias
Going back to the 30s, we have always been a quiet club, never shouting our mouths off, never giving the press much to go on and this has annoyed the media who have got petty and jealous, on top of that, we have always been associated with high standards and class and that breeds jealousy. In more modern times, we stopped the Leeds team of the early 70s which pissed off the northern based media, stopped the media luvvies of Liverpool in 89 and ended their period of dominance and stopped the media darlings of the 90s and 2000s Manu. Utd from winning things. This just pissed off the media who fell about themselves to fawn over them. On top of that, someone once told me that the ITV sport departments of the 70s, 80s and 90s were all made up of Granada and Yorkshire TV people so of course they hated us and that came through. With Sky too, Man. Utd were always their darlings and we stopped them winning things. Today, we have a generation of media types who were probably mostly glory fans of Manure and Liverpool as kids brought up with Sky heaping praise on Giggsy and Scholesy and Becks and Keano and King Eric and Barnesy and Robbie and Macca and blah, blah, blah,so of course they have an axe to grinds against us. I think, it's also an anti-London thing too because over the last few decades, we've had to put up with terrible media bias, West Ham get patronised, Palace ignored, Wimbledon were always mocked and derided and even though I detest them, the Chavs were never given the praise some of their performances and achievements actually warranted. The only exception for some reason is the scum, who they seem to love.
One other, less obvious point I think too, is that we were one of the very first big clubs to have regular, high quality, young black players in our team and for some of the media, especially those from the north, this wasn't particularly what they wanted to see in the early 80s.

True - you would find any Liverpool fan saying the same despite every other person in this country disagreeing.REB wrote:every team thinks the media is against them.
Ultimately media coverage is based on what will sell papers and adverts. United have the biggest fanbase of sheep, hence the almost exclusively popular coverage under Ferguson but the media supporting the fans in trying to push van Gaal out (rather than slating them for booing etc). Likewise with Liverpool they will mirror the fans, and the same with Arsenal - they will only get on Wenger's back when we are doing really badly and the fans are doing likewise because apart from then most of the sheep are fairly staunch Wenger defenders.
The lesser supported clubs like City and Chelsea will only make the news when they are doing really well, or for a period if they are doing awfully. If United were in Chelsea's position now then they would still be the #1 focus of attention, but since MOurinho got the boot the media are bored with Chelsea and haven't bothered with them.
Clubs like Southampton and Swansea are very popular but ultimately if they went down they would be forgotten almost instantly.

Exactly, makes wining even sweeter - fuck em allIW8Goalmachine wrote:I love it when everyone is against us

To add to the response by Perryashburtongroves , we were the first southern team to join the football league which was northern / midlands dominated, so were disliked from the start.
in the 30's we won shitloads and spent money like no other club so got called the Bank of England club which obviously attracted jealously from all quarters.
Re: Media Bias
not sure it was due to spending power, the directors were all from Eaton and Merchant bankers, they were the Club with class and prestige in the 30sStuartL wrote:Exactly, makes wining even sweeter - fuck em allIW8Goalmachine wrote:I love it when everyone is against us![]()

Well we broke the transfer record a few times and built the very lavish East Stand which nearly broke us when war broke out and we had no income coming in.Redarmy wrote:not sure it was due to spending power, the directors were all from Eaton and Merchant bankers, they were the Club with class and prestige in the 30sStuartL wrote:Exactly, makes wining even sweeter - fuck em allIW8Goalmachine wrote:I love it when everyone is against us![]()

Re: Media Bias
In general I don't think there is any bias against us. The Chavs, LVG etc, Pellegrini, Rodgers etc were all lambasted by the media.
If anything, I think AW has had a bit of an easy ride compared to some other managers.
However, I do hate the domination of ex-Victims players as pundits. In general, they're boring and could do with learning the Laws of the game.
