Can anyone see a future on-field leader in the current squad?
From a US sports background, Michael Jordan and Joe Montana were those leaders that were winners, that had the ability to say 'we will not lose', and to bring their entire team up to another level. Their sheer force of will and athletic ability made the team winners
We have had these in the past (Tony, Patrick), but I can't see any of the current bunch rising to the leadership level needed. Does this type even matter (given TOF and lack of tactics)?

having a captain that actually plays week in week out would be a good start

I think each player should know their position and what is expected of them. I am sorry but if your some 28+ year old bloke and you need someone else on the pitch to tell you what to do. You shouldn't be on the pitch.
Also what makes a good leader!!!. Is it someone who shouts he's head off, or maybe a silent leader who leads by example.
Flamini, shout's, points and gesture's a lot. Is he a good leader.... Or sanchez who doesn't say much but let's he's skills and scoring ability shine through.

Not sure its confined to just us, though agree with Rob
There dont seem to be the same leaders coming through as there were, barely any captains have the sort of stature that captains 10 or more years ago had.

I know it might be the pick of a bad bunch but Ramsey might offer something to the role. He's been at the club long enough now, plays regularly and was captain of Wales for a bit.

Re: On field leader
The idea of us having a leader on the pitch has been laughable since 2008 or so.
That said, I vote for Sanchez - A warrior who leads by example.

Re: On field leader
Alexis for me - the only candidate. Firstly it needs to be someone who is a regular (Arteta, Vermaelen.....give me strength), secondly they need to be able to command the respect of their team mates (this guy is up there with the very best) and thirdly they need to show a passion that endears them to supporters and gives a shining example on the pitch......we don't have anyone else like that. When he came on against Chavski, even with 10 men, for the first time we looked like doing something - he was chasing back and winning the ball and then driving at them committing tackles and winning countless free-kicks. We don't have a single other player with that type of attitude.
I don't see Coquelin, Ramsey, Koscielny or Cech as credible alternatives

Indeed. A lion amongst donkeys.
To be fair, I thought Vermaelen would have been a good captain, but he was a crock by the time he got it though. It's embarrassing to have mainly had a non playing captain since the traitor left for Barca.
