our French scouts

Post by g88ner »

Who are our french scouts?

In the last 3 seasons I think we've picked up Sanogo  whilst missing the boat on Aubameyang, Mahrez, Kante, Payet, Martial, and probably many others.

And we also failed to sign Griezmann from Real Sociedad (losing out to Atletico) even though we sold them Vela in the same summer they sold Griezmann for £24m. Then there was the whole Schneiderlin fiasco.

We've completely lost our edge in many markets, but France has always been the teet we've successfully milked (imagine Wenger milking that teet... go on...  ) but if we've lost that market too (which we clearly have) then it suggests we're employing the wrong people as they're missing some absolute gems and given the results of their work, I'm struggling to see why we employ them!

Hmm.... Arsenal employees picking up a salary without earning their wages. Who would have thought? :rubchin:

Wenger is very aware of all these players, don't worry about that

He just will not pay the money, or if he is very interested puts in a derisory offer so as to put the other clubs backs up, to ensure they definitely will not sell

I agree that Wenger will be aware of most of these players but surely it's up to the scouts to hammer it home how good these players are. Mahrez signed for <£1m, Kante was picked up for £6m, Payet £7m, Aubameyang around £11m  so money isn't the problem. It's realising how good they are as Arsenal are a hugely attractive club to sign for.

Even last summer Wenger said we have the money but it's not easy finding better players that we already have. Payet was playing at Marseille and Wenger admitted he'd been following Kante for years, so why did he choose to stick with Rosicky, Flamini, Arteta, etc. instead of sign these players? - then of course there's Martial; a player Wenger admitted he'd been following but wasn't aware he was for sale

I think our failures are so much bigger than one man. We appear to be dysfunctional from top to toe :?

If you are to believe the senile old lying b*stard, we had looked closely at most of those players before they moved clubs (suppose that makes them virtual squad players instead of virtual team members cos no bids were made ?). I think it is fair to assume that nobody expects us to be bidders for all the top players in the French league, but we sure as shit shouldn't be clueless spectators when it is all going on
Personally I think that the sonogoals signing was a much worse reflection on our scouts than all the non signings - with the non signings we can argue that they weren't convinced about the quality of the players, but we can only assume that they scouted le postman intensively and then decided that the guy had the required quality..................it doesn't get much more damning of our scouts than that

Can imagine Wenger has known all these players since they were kids and has tracked their progress, thats guaranteed
Do not think the scouts have any influence over what Wenger actually does

Why he does not buy anyone?? thats down to the man himself but what we do know from people like Frank McLintock is that he sets his own valuation on players and will not exceed that figure, even if it could mean the difference of actually winning the Title

Not a question of funds, we all know they have the money.....this could be difference between 3 and 5 Million valuation
what he has said himself is that he will only by if it strengthens what he already has
So assumption would be that he rates the current squad far above anyone else

Agree with the dysfunctional club comment, since Dein left he has been allowed to get himself into such a position that no one at the club can dare question him

Years ago, I heard him say words to that effect himself. Wenger was set to fight Fergie for top club/dog - he said there would be a power shift from Manchester to London - then Abramovich came in with all his money, and there was a power sift for a time to London, wrong part though.

I don't think Wenger ever caught up with the money that came in to the English game - (Doesn't stop him from making millionaires out of duds though.) - but he just can't bring himself to pay top dollar transfer fees and wages. He's still trying to do it on a shoe string, which is why he keeps playing people out of position, it worked with Henry, so try it with everyone. Unfortunately, even the kids with potential cost a lot of money these days. You have to splash to cash to keep up Arsene!

Our scouting system in general is a joke, full stop, let alone the French scouts (Grimandi, et al) :banghead:

The quality has been there in France - it's just that the market is saturated now because every PL club is sending scouts there.

Chelsea built a world class title winning side around a Ligue 1 core - Cech, Essien and Drogba were all integral. Difference from the likes of Vieira, Petit, Pires etc is that they cost more money. We are effectively vying with the likes of Newcastle for French players nowadays - the reality is if we hadn't signed Gorpud then he would probably be at the Barcodes staring at Championship football next year right now.

Wenger had options to buy all those players, but declined
