Graduating with a First!

Post by Arsenal Till I Die »

Just got back from Menorca tonight, landed about quarter past ten and not long been home. I have since found out that I will be graduating from University next Monday with a First Class law degree (LLB, First Class Hons)! :barscarf: :barscarf:

Now to go and celebrate.

ps. You are also going to need to be a Very Good Solicitor or have a side job as well to pay off the loan you took out in the first place - I hear Brazilian Gooner may be able to help in that department. :D

I'm very interested in Medical Law, so I suppose I could try and get him by arguing he lacks capacity. :barscarf:

I have a secured place at law school to do the LPC but at the price of 14k I think I may defer it for a year and look for (paid) work in the legal sector. I do think that spending the year working would benefit as it would give me the chance to get more experience (pro bono is all well and good and I've enjoyed doing it but it doesn't pay the bills) under my belt for when I'm applying for training contracts etc, it will give me the chance to save a reasonable sum, so I don't have to go to the bank and ask to borrow 14 bloody grand and there is a possibility, providing that a firm may sponsor some of the LPC fee if they want to keep me on. It's a long term plan but I'll get there. :barscarf:

Yeah the LPC is a tickbox exercise and a complete cash cow for the law schools.

It depends on your personal circumstances but my advice generally is that if you're looking to apply to commercial firms Then they largely recruit 2 years in advance and will fund the LPC and possibly living expenses so don't fork out to do it yourself. It won't make you a better candidate, all it does is open up the possibilities a bit more if you want to do high street work because those firms aren't likely to pay for the LPC.

Hammer the training contract applications now - even if you're not confident or even sure about the firm then any experience of assessment days and interviews are great. Getting a good paralegal job will be really helpful and you will probably find that you will have a really improved chance of securing a training contract applying internally.

It's incredibly competitive and the average age of a trainee on qualification is 28 so other than Magic Circle firms being recruited straight from uni is a minority route nowadays - that said you seem realistic and there will always be jobs for bright and impressive people regardless of their age.

Congratulations, you must have put in a lot of hard work to get a first.

Good luck in the legal profession, have you decided what type of Law you wish to specialise in or are you just looking for a training contract to start with. Many years ago I worked with someone who moved from my old firm to Clifford Chance, shame I lost touch with her could have given you a referral.
