The pet Project Thread

Post by BFG4 »

In honour of the signing of Rob Holden, and the Japanese guy, I thought we should have a thread of the pet project signings made, over the last 10 years. All those players, who were supposed superstars in the making, but turned out to be average at best.

Will leave this running for now but if it degenerates into another anti-Wenger thread then it's getting merged with the Wenger thread...

For me, two that looked good initially but were soon two of the worst were Song and Denilson - the fact they were outed as bang average to shit within a season by most observers but had their contracts extended for years (with pay rises) was criminal. :x :roll:

I read this morning that we've signed a 16 year old Norwegian CB.

It's always a gamble, but if he turns out as good as Senderos and Djourou ............

Let's not forget;

Die Hard lifelong Arsenal/tottenham fan David Bentley. Started well but turned out to be all knickers, no gash. :roll:
And he was an actual gash. :x

Jermaine Pennant - most overrated youngster in the history of the game.

Graham Barrett - A fellow Dubliner that never really got a chance under Wenger. His mate Dave worked with me for 2 years and Dave reckoned Barrett left Arsenal feeling demotivated, deflated and bitter at not getting a real chance.

Did a quick search and here is a list of all the players that have played under Wenger;

http://news.arseblog.com/2015/10/full-l ... ne-wenger/

Some serious talent there, but far far more absolute shite. :|

Pennant would be the standout example for me too

Is Eisfeld still knocking around?
Toral? Ryo?

Oh and does Park Choo Choo Choo Young count or was that just a marketing exercise?

Toral has just come to Granada on loan for the season. I've never seen him play, but I hope he's decent.

I thought Eisfeld looked a good prospect on the few occasions I saw him, but I think he's gone.

Olivier Giroud :lol:

Yes, Eisfeld is gone. He looked pretty promising in a pre-season in the Far East, but was sold to Fulham and is now playing for Bochum back in Germany. So goes the story of so many of our youth signings.

Gervinho was to become a world class player (or was he suppose to be one already when he joined us? Another failure in a long list... Cygan, Chamakh , etc etc

Oh, the myth of Wanker's kids. Beating a few lower division teams in the league cup and doing fuck all else before ending up in the third tier of different European leagues. Always the fucking future with that *word censored*. Always the future that never arrives.

Most managers seem unable to identify when a young player is ready for first team football.

Coquelin, Kane, Rashford (and the other Manure youngsters who came into the team) etc only appeared when injury or form crises hit their clubs.
Unless it was immaculately fortuitous timing, they were ready before, so why didn't their managers see it?

I wonder how many of our youngsters could have made the grade if they'd been given a chance.

I certainly saw more in Eisfeld than I did in Coq.

Agree 100% I saw Eisfeld play 3 or 4 times and he was quality and had bags of potential waiting to be nurtured - so of course clueless shipped him out :roll: :banghead:

Pet projects step forward Almunia 109 games,Bendtner 108 games and Denilson 96 games projects persevered with over many seasons when no other top club would of taken them for free.........you could rename this thread 'the ones we couldn't flush' :)
