The Disgrace of Arsenal’s Transfer Speculation (23/6)

Usual thread starter… I know from talking to people, reading chatrooms and emails that people are fed up with all the transfer stories. But look at it this way.
Other clubs let it be known they are interested in a player to unsettle them. Arsenal just approach the club or player’s agent without letting the media know about it. So when a signing comes it is often out of the blue.
What would happen if Arsenal went about their business in the way other clubs do? Simple – everyone thinks… Wenger rates this guy. He must be good. We’ll get into an auction for his services. So word leaked about 3 years back that Arsenal wanted Robinho. Real Madrid stepped in. The leak was probably down to the agent contacting other clubs saying – look, Arsenal want my player!
So I am happy with the club’s way of doing things and don’t worry about stories I read in the press and online. If Hleb and Adebayor are sold, I reckon their replacements will be better. ‘Adebarndoor’ should have outscored Ronaldo last season with the number of chances he had. Give me Roque Santa Cruz any day.

Ed is spot on. Why oh why get your knickers in a twist over transfer speculation?
You know that the vast majority of agents are all shits.
You surely know that the press make it up as they go along.
You must know that the vast majority of web sites just repeat all the other websites who in turn repeat every other aspect of the media.
You must have twigged it by now that the Spanish press are just shit-stirring w@nkers who act on behalf of the big clubs and the same applies in Italy.
You must have got a slight hint that many players are money grubbing shits who shat on their previous clubs to come to Arsenal and are happy to repeat the process.
Why would our Club want to comment on any of this speculation? Do you really want them to slag off their own players for being money grubbing cnuts? They can't say some of our players are trying to bugger off for more money. Nor can they say who we're after and give the game away.
Besides I like surprises - remember Sol? That's the way to keep quiet about a transfer.

With the number of players that newspapers allege Arsenal are supposed to be buying or selling it is difficult for the club to keep denying or agreeing with each report. I think our press are pretty poor and it's just lazy journalism to think of a player that might fit in at Arsenal and then saying we're interested in them.
We just have to accept that it is all speculation and it's only a done deal when the club announce it officially.
As regards Adeybayor, I would be more than happy to get £21 million for him. We could easily get a quality striker for less than that. He was beginning to believe the hype as well and I think he was getting too big for his boots (which are pretty huge anyway!)and starting to slag off the other players on the pitch in some of the latter games of the season did not impress me.

To the author:
You have worked yourself up into a state for nothing.
Why should Arsenal say anything?
Business is difficult enough without declaring your hand.
Keep it all shtum, make your move, then announce who has signed.
Would you rather be like Spurs, who had that lovely consolation letter from Rivaldo explaining why he did not sign?
So what if the papers link us to a hundred players over a summer.
I love the speculation, love guessing who will be bought and sold, and the press boys have a job to do - to sell their papers.
Most of it is nonsense, but it is part and parcel of the game.

I share some of your frustrations, but if Arsenal's policy was to comment on all transfer speculation, they'd have to employ a full time team of 10 people to keep up with all the drivel that is written! And as for statements of players not being for sale, that's all well and good but what if the player forces the clubs hand? (as it appears Mr Ronaldo may be about to do up in Manc Land). It leaves the club looking stupid. The best policy is to make no comment and behind the scenes do all that is necessary to ensure the final outcome is in Arsenal's best interests - and that includes offloading key players who have decided the grass is greener.
Arsenal have always does business the right way, in their own way and are envied throughout the game for the way we conduct ourselves. Long may that continue.
As for the merit in selling Ade, I question it. Ok he missed chances last season, but he has improved every year and is becoming a top player. And it's not just his goalscoring that it key, his all round link up and hold up play has become the focal point of our attacking game. If you bring in a replacement you again have to wait for him to settle, wait for him to get use to his team mates and our pattern of play. We can't be in transition or a rebuilding programme forever.
For me the loss of Ade would be more disappointing than the loss of Vieira and Henry. Those two were of course better players, but their best years were behind them and we were moving into a period of re-building where change was needed. Adebayor's best years are ahead of him and we should be at the stage of Arsene's 'project' where we're about to deliver, not regress and need one more season of development.
So we sell Adebayor, have a strong season but just fall short again ready to win the title in 2009/2010 with our new players now fully beded in. Then next summer it's Cesc that's off, so we take another step back. Where does it end?
For me we need to review our wage structure not our PR policy. No we shouldn't be held to ransom, but we need to find the balance and be realistic. Times have changed and there are now very few players who play just for the shirt.

Of course you're right that most if not all the speculation that takes place around this time is bollocks. But maybe if someone from Arsenal came out immediately to knock the rumours down, they wouldn't be repeated as if they were fact for weeks on end!!
At the very least, it would allow the Arsenal supporters to distinguish 'the wheat from the chaff' and spare us all this anguish we're going through!!

I agree with this page and that is one that really annoys me about the Arsenal board. Are we ever going to sign Nasri?? There is so much talk in the last 5 weeks and still it just keeps dragging on and its starting to annoy me. Nasri is a quality player and i think he will be a excellent player when or if he signs. The board at Arsenal say we have money to spend why dont we show this and spend 30 million on David Villa. He will want Europeon football and we need someone with Adebayor up front to finish off the chances that will would have scored in the bad patch we had in the middle of the season.
