it is just sad that this is the level of ambition at the club these days.
it will be interesting to see what happens this summer because with some really top managers coming into to the PL Wenger might actually have to do some transfer dealings this summer. But would you bet against him achieving another top 4 finish next season ? I certainly wouldn't. On we go....
That's a sad reality but if you take the passion of being a fan out of it and look at it like a straight forward employment situation, he is doing exactly what his employer wants.
Kroenke has publicly stated that he isn't chasing trophies and the aim is to secure the financial windfall from finishing in the top four (maybe not those exact words but that was the implication). Wenger is achieving that so from an employment point of view he is achieving his targets! Simple as that really! That being the case, why would the owner want to sack him?
As fans of the club we see it differently and whilst top four year on year may not the end of the world if you're genuinely challenging for the number one spot, it is if it is the sole objective of the club. As I've said before, we don't have a right to win it. I do think that we have an obligation to genuinely try to do so and that is what I think is lacking.
There's no doubt in my mind that our failure to finish as champions this season is 100% unacceptable given the disastrous season that the other top clubs have had. The manager is 100% responsible for that failure and in the minds of the fans, me included, he should be held to account for that. However, in the mind of his employer.............
I think he'll go at the end of next season purely because his contract ends then. I don't think it'll be as a result of any type of protest.
I also think that unless he is very active and goes after some real quality this summer he'll fail to achieve that precious virtual trophy in his last year.
