As big a leader of the civil rights movement as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. A pretty good boxer too. :box: :box:
A Great man and a Great Boxer, but I would not compare him with Malcolm X or Martin Luther King. Ali was a member of the Nation of islam,(a black separatist organisation),which I think should be considered as just as racist as the White separatist K.K.K.).
He also called White people "Devils", and Joe Frazier never forgave him for labelling him an "Uncle Tom."
We should recognise the greatness in the man,but we,(and the media), should reign in on the "Sanctification" of him.

Calling white people devils is pretty mild mate, if you compare it to the KKK lynching black people.

Malcolm X was shot by 3 members from the Nation of Islam.
Martin Luther King was assassinated.
Whilst there is no doubting they were leaders of the Civil Rights movement, they were in opposition to one another. Ali walked with both of them and survived. Ali challenged the US govt directly and lost. He then distanced himself from the Nation of Islam. Ali was in effect radicalised by Islam at a time when he was disenchanted with racial separation. You can't mix up "fighting talk banter" to judge a person. Ali apologised to Frazier a few times but also knew that he had repaid him with the Manila fight, as both fighters got 5m dollars for that fight . Frazier needed Ali to get the big money. Best quote I heard was from George Foreman he said something like " even if you disliked Muhammad Ali, you just wanted to meet him again to dislike even more".
Ali wasn't a saint, he never tried to be one. Just like Nelson Mandela.
