Because we live in the Blame Society augie. There's always got to be someone to blame when arseholes don't take responsibility for their own actions. And there is always lawyer scum on hand to make sure "you get what you deserve".

Fall off a ladder in work because you idiotically overstretched whilst carrying heavy stuff? Hey - no one in the construction company warned you that this could lead to you falling! Their fault!
When I worked for my old man's construction company we had a fucking moron of a carpenter try to sue us after he rested a piece of timber on his thigh and drilled right through the timber and into his thigh just behind his knee cap. Resulted in a terrible injury that left him partly disabled. But that was our fault because we didn't provide "proper safety equipment" beyond a helmet, hi-vis vest, eye protection, ear protection and a safety harness for scaffo work! What more can you provide - a functioning brain and some cop-on??
My old man being a decent bloke helped this piece of shit with his medical bills too and paid him whilst he was on sick leave. And then he sued us! Anyway it was kicked out of court and he got fucked by his lawyers for costs too. Stupid prick.
I agree that it stinks to high heaven buddy, but right now I am absolutely raging (yes worse than normal ) - the girl in question is a local girl whose grandparents (who raised her) had shopped with us for the past 20 odd years and continued to do so even after she started this off. She got 4 stitches in her finger and was back in work after a week (would have been back sooner but we wouldn't let her until stitches were out). My wife and parents are being philosophical saying that it is the insurance company that will be paying out the money not me, but that doesn't wash it away for me, plus you can bet your life our insurance will get a severe hike going forward

I saw the movie of that - it was called Killer Driller or smething wasn't it?
Similar thing happened when my older brother - he used to run a Double Glazing (Windows & Doors etc) co, and he always provided safety gear - special grip Gloves etc, and this one bloke would never wear any of the safety gear he picked up a Glass unit one that was going to be put in a Upvc frame and and it slipped through his wets hands - he lost 3 fingers and then had the gall to try and sue my brother/the company - Thankfully every single person 12 in all in the company gave evidence against him and he lost the case (as well as 3 digits).
