Why I can't get excited about bloody Samir Nasri (23/5)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Nasri

Post by Rad »

Just to remind you that there was quite a lot of discussion about Nasri in last year's forum. I mentioned him as one to watch for after seeing him play in the France vs Ukraine match.

We gonna get a little excited we ACTUALLY gonna sign someone...he may not be a big name to us IF it happens..but its not always about splashing out on big names... u could spend miillions on big name players such as Ballack, Malouda, Anelka, Shevchenko etc...and STILL not win anything! Lets just be happy we linked with someone who apparently is gonna be big...but lets just HOPE he doesnt get big then leave us.... as the rest do.. :?

signings

Post by Peter Cavill »

After supporting Arsenal for forty years I've got used to not signing players that I hoped we would buy. This must be the same for supporters of most teams but since I've supported Arsenal we have rarely spent money on big name players. Notable exceptions have been
Alan Ball '71
Malcolm McDonald '76
Tony Woodcock '82
Smudger '87
Spunky '90
Wrighty '91
Dennis '95
David Platt '95
Marc Overmars '97

Players I would have liked to have signed include
John Barnes from Watford in '87
Roy Keane from Forest in '90
Chris Sutton from Norwich in '94
Kevin Phillips from Watford in '97 (or when he was at Sunderland)
Ruud van Nistlerooy from PSV in '01
Andy Johnson from Palace 2002 (he's a gooner as well!)
Dean Ashton from Norwich '06
and last year Torres and/or Tevez

So when the transfer window opens, although I still get excited with anticipation, tune into Ceefax page 338 every day, google any players we are linked with and hope for some big name signings, deep down I know it probably ain't going to happen. That's what part of supporting Arsenal is all about.

i wouldn't say smudger was regarded as a big signing at the time.

and i'd add sol campbell in 2001 to that list

Samir Nasri was on nobody's wish list because he is too expensive to view him as possible under Arsene, and also (for me) because it would be not worth it to enter a bidding war with Juve, Milan et al.

I can remember being excited about signing " Smudger " at the time and we paid £850 000 for him which seemed a lot for us to spend in those days.

I didn't include Sol because although he was a "big" signing , we got him for free!

I did forget to mention Charlie Nicholas (I don't know how! ) in '83. And we paid £800 000 for him.

As we've seen only too well this season signings like Nasri are a gamble, which like Sagna could pay off - or maybe not. Chelski discovered the hard way and too late that Anelka hasn't changed much from the Supersulk we knew; his performances for them and post-Moscow grumblings probably means Wenger was right to give him a miss.

Nevertheless I was keen on Torres this time last year and would like to see even just one big signing - maybe Santa Cruz as rumoured in the Times - 'cause if it all goes wrong again we will have another transition season and all that might lead to... :(

Alan Smith was a big signing for a number of fans There was a real buzz about him, I remeber him playing for Leicester against us at Highbury whe we had signed him buthe was seeing out theseason for them, and there was a buzz on theNorth Bank about it when hecame out and warmed up and we sang his name.

Got to add to the list of big signings:

Thierry Henry £10M - £11M
Robert Pires I think £6M but was the player who had just set up the winner in Euro 2000 and had a real buzz when we bought him.
Sylvain Wiltord £13M
Jose Antonio Reyes up to £17M max depending on appearances
Theo Walcott up to £12M but reduced to £9M, massive queue of clubs chasing his signature.
William Gallas - £5M plus Ashley Cole, experienced international player and two time league winner.

Whatever happened to Jose Antonio? At first he showed such great promise?

His family never settled properly and he lived with them. They are from boiling hot Seville, and England is cold!

He had a break up with his girlfriend too while he was here..plus other family tragedies.

I do not think that the Aragones racist affair helped either, on the footage Reyes embarasingly laughs when Aragones insults Henry.
Not sure what Henry and Reyes said in private, but Henry used to give Reyes terrible stares during games, cannot have helped his confidence.

He was simply a player who came with a lot of potential but did not improve a jot during his time at the club, and then got kicked to pieces by Gary Neville in that game at Old Trafford when we lost the unbeaten run.

He took his knocks, but after that I think it was matter of time until he returned to Spain.

Quartz,

I don't think Jose had any other facial expression than this one?
