Alan Smith was a big signing for a number of fans There was a real buzz about him, I remeber him playing for Leicester against us at Highbury whe we had signed him buthe was seeing out theseason for them, and there was a buzz on theNorth Bank about it when hecame out and warmed up and we sang his name.Peter Cavill wrote:gooner ed
I can remember being excited about signing " Smudger " at the time and we paid £850 000 for him which seemed a lot for us to spend in those days.
I didn't include Sol because although he was a "big" signing , we got him for free!
I did forget to mention Charlie Nicholas (I don't know how! ) in '83. And we paid £800 000 for him.
His family never settled properly and he lived with them. They are from boiling hot Seville, and England is cold!proudtosaythatname wrote:Whatever happened to Jose Antonio? At first he showed such great promise?

He had a break up with his girlfriend too while he was here..plus other family tragedies.
I do not think that the Aragones racist affair helped either, on the footage Reyes embarasingly laughs when Aragones insults Henry. Not sure what Henry and Reyes said in private, but Henry used to give Reyes terrible stares during games, cannot have helped his confidence.
He was simply a player who came with a lot of potential but did not improve a jot during his time at the club, and then got kicked to pieces by Gary Neville in that game at Old Trafford when we lost the unbeaten run.
He took his knocks, but after that I think it was matter of time until he returned to Spain.
