As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
The thing is Arteta has nothing to hide behind now with PEA gone, Xhaka is a clusterfuck, every man and his dog with any footballing knowledge (with the exception of a bunch of pundits who rate him because of his comedy value and a bunch of keyboard idiots) knows this, so he really has nowhere to hide, what's left give or take a couple of players is his team, the ones in the main he bought, the ones he plays regularly in the formation and style he favours.
For me if the team cant push on now it is ALL on Arteta and Edu, between the two of them they failed to strengthen in the window and immaterial of how good most of the first 11 are they have left us short in key positions. If the process fails now it is all on them.
There were calls on this forum to sell Aubameyang last summer. The way he was playing in the games prior to getting dropped it was like he was sabotaging the team's effort to win matches. The Watford game being a really poor game from him, and his subsequent misses at OT and at Everton cost the team vital points. The team then won 6 games in row without him scoring 21 goals. His absence clearly didn't impoverish the team. Hanging around the training ground would've eventually had a negative impact on the team. It was his time to go. Sad in the way it ended.
That was mostly augie! Aubamewingie was banging in 30 goals a season and augie wanted him fucked out!
Your memory is playing tricks on you my midget friend - I wanted auba sold the year before he signed his new contract. My argument at the time was that his market value was never gonna be higher, and for the amount of money that was being suggested we could have bought Tierney and Dembele (Lyon striker), and that would have the strengthened the team overall. If that doesnt ring a bell with you now, try remembering that it was suggested at the time that my feelings were influenced by some Irish Celtic bias As it turned out I was right on a few levels - firstly the new contract was a massive mistake for the club to the point that we got nothing for him, and secondly Tierney has proven himself to be a good signing to the point that a large percentage of the fanbase want him as captain.
Fast forward to now and it is a different story for me - I was ok selling him back then if we used the money to replace him, but selling/giving him away with only laca and nketieh left is madness
Saka and Martinelli will be offered contracts in the summer. Rather than incrementally increase their contracts, just go right straight to 200k a week for both. Stop treating them like two young lads and treat them for what they are, our two best and most valuable players.
When PEA and Ozil were looking like leaving on a free we put the deal together to keep them. Just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean it was a failure. Getting PEA to sign on in 2020 was a coup, given he was at the peak of his game and could have gone anywhere in Europe. We went above and beyond and managed to offer him a salary big enough to keep him. The intent is whats important, not necessary the outcome.
We really need to close the door behind to the RVP, Sanchez, Nasri situations - that cant happen again. Granted its almost been a decade since RVP left, and 4 years since Sanchez left. We haven't lost any big name players lately against our will to Europe, let alone a domestic rival.
But Liverpools interest in Martinelli and Saka is real. Salah is as good as gone, FSG will not match his salary demands, and with his contract set to expire after next season, he will be sold this summer. So Liverpool will sell and get a fee for him. They may use that fee and bid for Martinelli/Saka. No major deals will be done until after the World Cup, so we should be looking to sign them both up after this season ends and prior to the World Cup.
I would love for Liverpool to lose Salah and we tie up Martinelli and Saka. I actually see finishing above Liverpool as possible over the next 2-3 seasons, perhaps as even as early as next season if things go right. They are ending a cycle. So many key players over 30 and the Salah era has half a season left.

Not with our current manager mate...just not going to happen. I wish it could and would, but not with arteta at the wheel.

Sorry mate but that's too simplistic theory wise because we all know on here Arteta does not have anything to do with transfers, that is all edu and Co.
I'm quite sure Arteta wanted to strengthen in January, in fact there have been posts on here that one deal for a cm was all but done and dusted but ygd kroenkes vetoed it.
For all his faults Arteta is an experienced man in the ways of football, you really believe he doesn't want the best team he can muster, you believe he doesn't want a new striker or cm, of course he does but thus is modern day Arsenal, we won't be investing to compete for the title until the yanks fuck off.

Our best player is ESR by a country mile, top scorer and that's from coming off the bench a lot too, I read a piece about players who make the most impact in games stats wise, ESR was at the top.

I too think ESR will be the better player out of him and Saka - bit worried as to why he was back on the bench - is his fitness lapsing ?

Well he has always looked the fittest bloke on the pitch when I've seen him play, he is that dynamic, people also don't see what work he does in winning the ball back.
He could have a minor injury but I just feel that because we paid big bucks for Odegaard that he seems to get in ahead of ESR.

I will add to that, ESR is a player who moves the ball very quickly, he passes and moves all game, that's what you need to unlock good defensive teams, Odegaard does not it at the same level for me.

He could be. One way to get all three of them in the team, is to move Martinelli down the middle, Saka on the left and ESR on the right.
Given the history this club has with converting wingers into strikers (Henry & RVP), why are we waiting. Especially considering Lacazette is about as sharp as a used butter knife. This whole notion of needing a player to hold the ball up is rubbish. I want forwards who can run in behind and run at the defence. Not forwards who play with their back to the goal.

The whole purpose of a number 10 is to be the link feeding the ball for the forwards - odeargod taking too many touches slows that process down, and when you have fast forwards like saka and martinelli, slow ball is very much a negative. No way should odeargod be in the 10 position ahead of smith-rowe

Martinelli doesn't have the game to be the lone striker - when you've got great attacking midfield players, you need a link man who brings them into the game. We will end up ruining him and the likes of ESR playing them wrongly (a bit like Wenger did to the Ox). Get a proper bloody CF in the Summer - Calvert Lewin would be perfect for this team, whether he scores 10 or 20, I don't care.....as long as Martinelli, Saka, ESR and Odegaard are all weighing in with goals it will almost be irrelevant.
Wenger had a history of playing people in unusual positions in the belief of Cruyff's total football . Very few can do it but to shoehorn people in without upsetting his favourites their careers never reached full potential .
I know it will be a bit contentious but Lord Bendtner himself played as a winger ???
Just the goal against Tottenham when he came on as a last minute sub shows where he should have been played.
And asking him to run with the ball with the ball with his first touch in Paris showed where and when he should not have,
Going back a long way reminds me of Ramsey picking John Radford for England and playing him right wing . He spent all night putting in the crosses that he should have been on the end of.

It was when he started playing Bendtner on the wing that I fully realised the extent of his lunacy.
