Well I doubt very much that he could be over the hill at 29/30 especially as he was every inch the thoroughbred athlete, but the sunny climes, the slower pace of the Spanish game with definately suit him as he approaches the end of his career!
The change of scenery or the "fresh challenge" as players like to put it nowadays is probably also just what he needs to get motivated cos he certainly seemed to fall out of love with the game, for us anyways, and he'll certainly need to!
Every player realises they have to put in extra effort at a new club as they'll be under close scrutiny from everybody, especially the fans, and in that regard he had become almost untouchable with us, the Barca fans won't be so forgiving in fact I sure he's well aware that he'll never enjoy such tacit immunity again no matter where he goes!
