A good team must have a balance of youth and experience and at 29 years of age watkins still has another 3 seasons at the top level in him at least

To be pedantic, Wrighty was a few months short of his 28th birthday when we signed him, but as a late starter he had loads left in the tank.

Ollie Watkins isn't quite the player he was last season, hence why he lost his spot to Dhuran before he got himself banned at Newcastle a few weeks ago. Having said that he's still better than anything else we have, but possibly a short-term (this/next season) fix.

We once signed a bloke called Davor Suker - who had been among the elite strikers of world football and top scorer at the 98 World Cup Finals - just a little too late. It is a difficult call with strikers.

Arsenal are taking a risk with move for Ollie Watkins - @Football_LDN

Told that amid suggestions of Aston Villa frustration at the timing of a move, no bid was made on Wednesday. Indicating any approach came before.

It might be a difficult call IF we had a striker better than watkins at the club already, but as you yourself stated, watkins is way better than anything we currently have so it would be a no brainer if we could get him. As I have consistantly said, there are only a few strikers who I would support signing this month (osimhen, isak, watkins, duran plus maybe delap or ferguson), but signing vlahovic or sesko is a huge no thanks for me. Reality is that we will not win anything with our current batch of "strikers" so if we can bring in a quality striker it should be a no brainer

Lots of pre Champions League chatter about ‘naughty’ Arsenal bid for Ollie Watkins. Well placed Arsenal sources point out that there’s been NO bid to Villa today. And that the £60m being quoted in media reports is well north of the reality.

Jhon Duran due for Al-Nassr medical tomorrow, as first reported by @David_Ornstein . However Al-Nassr remain undecided over Duran or Victor Boniface, whose deal is yet to be finalised. A final call expected imminently.

Watkins not coming now

Absolute fucking nonsense. I don't imagine for one moment, that we put a bid in. All the hallmarks of that Dhuran's agent inventing a story to put pressure on the Saudi club to get the deal done in case Villa change their mind.

I was never convinced we could get watkins, but you have to ask that IF watkins at 29 years old is valued by AFC at £60m, would we not be willing to spend £17m more for 21 year old duran ?? I think duran is looking for first team starts rather than money, and I think he would stay at villa if watkins is sold, and I think he would join us over going to saudi

We sure like pissing Villa off with late bids. Pretty sure we did something similar with Douglas Luis a few seasons ago.
Not keen on Watkins, he’s not elite and fluffs a lot of chances. He would’ve been murdered here if he’d failed to convert those glaring opportunities when we beat them 2-0 at their place.
Let’s hope this is not part of some preemptive ploy to suppress discontent if we don’t sign anyone. The look we tried excuse is not going to wash for even the most die hard Artetasexuals

My eldest lad is saying that is exactly what this is about but I am dismissing that because I think not getting a striker will be viewed as totally unacceptable to the fans, and bidding for messi, salah, watkins or whoever wont mean shit if we dont bring one of them in
If anything it reveals the lack of a coherent transfer strategy. Chances of bringing anyone in diminishes everyday with the window shutting in 5days and the club continuing to pursue unrealistic targets. We need at least 2 attackers but on I doubt we’d even bring 1 on current evidence.
