Modern Football Bol**cks

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Slightly off topic here , and I am well aware of the opinions here about women's football quality wise etc, but in general how do English people feel about the constant references to " The Lionesses " and to a lesser degree on the male side as " The Theee Lions".? Why I ask is that I read an article where the author threw out the question about the teams not being referred to by their proper name ,that being England. The author felt that it is a deliberate attempt to get everyone on board with the teams even if they were not comfortable calling themselves English even though they live in England . I listened to Sky Sports News talking about the women's Euros and I can't honestly say I heard the word England in the piece. It was Lionesses all the time.
This does not seem to apply in other sports.
I'm not a fan of international football in any form, and I'm not from England, but I would say international teams should be referred to by the name of the country they represent.
Personally I quite like the women’s team being referred to as the lionesses by the media, as it’s a quick way for my brain to process that it can switch off for the next 2 minutes as whatever is being spoken about isn’t important.

What is annoying is when you see or hear a headline about ‘Arsenal’ and click on the link or prick your ears up to then find out it’s about the women’s team.

It's jumping on bandwagon that has prevailed down under for quite a long while. The female All Blacks are known as the Silver Ferns, in reference to the silver fern on the jersey.

In Australia the wimmin (not sure which sport) have the most cringe worthy name of the jilleroos

For some reason in order to have an identity in women's sport you need to be known under a nickname. I suspect the lezzers love that type of stuff

Thought I might be able to access it through the Online Gooner site.

Lo and behold what do I find as the lead article....

Is it about The Arsenal..... nope

Is it about the Arsenal lezzers ..... nope

Hmm, what interesting piece of Arsenal related journalism could it be.... well, the lead article is about the fucking lionesses https://www.onlinegooner.com/

What in the name of all that is holy, is the Online Gooner doing writing a piece on that pile of steaming shite?

I just don't have the words :banghead:

If the forum closes down for good, where do we all go?

It's like the Island of Misfit Toys on here; we can't go and join other forums with other, more positive, people! :worried:
Most would be banned within 24 hours, including receiving warnings :D

Trouble is, forums tend to be full of the brain dead who hang on Diet Pep's every word, so when their cosy little world is questioned, they throw their toys out of the pram and those who don't demonstrate unquestionable loyalty are drummed out pretty quickly
Its only a personal opinion but the gooner itself has been in steady decline since KW left as editor and the current soy boy took over, he/she/they have practically turned it into a cesspit of lezzerball with the odd smattering of the real game, its sad to see but its not surprising when they have to beg for subscribers every year from a fan base of god knows how many millions.

On the forum...if it ever does go and us gentlemen of a certain vintage are out in the cold with nowhere to go, i'd have the tech smarts and a bit of funding to stand up a new gig and just circulate the new address via twatter or similar...mind you id actually have to join twatter first.

But hopefully it never comes to that as i reckon this place is one of the last bastions of fairly sane if a little eccentric gooners with the clubs genuine interests at heart.

Agreed Dec, Kev is an old school Gooner who certainly fits the mindset on here and ran the fanzine very well. If I remember correctly, the new guy was some local, minor football/Arsenal journo or blogger, who seems to epitomise modern, woke football fans.

Good to hear that if this place were to go, you have the wherewithal to get something up and running. Obviously you’re a tech guy?

As you say, most of us on here wouldn’t fit elsewhere. Miserable, cranky old fuckers, but understand the game and love this club. I often wonder how long I could have limped on through the Wenger years without this place. I’d been reading the forum for quite a while before joining, but didn’t post for years after signing up because I knew it would become a drug that I couldn’t shake. Even though I wasn’t posting back then, it was good to know that others felt the same way about Wenger, because pre 2009/10, I thought I was the only bloke who knew the Old Fraud was washed up. The gallows humour on here was brilliant through those final 10 yrs of his “reign” and kept me going.

This is a really interesting post BWK. I’m about as cynical as they come, but even I hadn’t thought about it in this way.

I’d noticed the non stop references to “The Lionesses”, but thought this was just all part of the drive to promote (fucking excessively) the women’s game. They were at it on the radio this morning, talking about the “Lionesses”.

I hadn’t noticed the absence of the term “England”, but even then I’d have simply assumed that it was a way of ensuring the identity of the women’s team and separating it from the men’s England team. The term “Lions” is hardly ever used for the men (well, not that I hear) and I think if someone were to randomly say “the England team”, most people would automatically think of the men’s football team, rather than the cricket, rugby, athletic etc. teams.

While I do think the use of Lionesses is a means of creating a distinct identity, the idea that it’s a way of avoiding saying “England”, so that the woke “toxic nationalism” narrative is maintained, isn’t out of the question. Interesting.

yeah ive spent the best part of 30 odd years (not in football) but in tech in varying capacity's, older now so managing tech lads rather than being one.

but still savvy enough to know a forum like this is a doddle to stand up and pretty cheap to run. Id say most of the time spent would be the effort to make a new one look like the old one. But it'd be a sad day to have to move but we'd at least have somewhere to move to.

It's something I've been a tad concerned about. We nearly got shut down permanently before. It was a close call. I know Spuddy had a friend that could set up a new forum and it was considered at the time. But I haven't heard from Spuddy in a long time.

Anyone else that wants to be notified and invited to any proposed new forum you can pm me your current user name and an email address and I'll keep track of it.

Just in case we were ever suddenly shut down. There is no intention of setting up a new forum or anything.

This feels suspiciously like a plan to get all of us fucking lunatics from the golden age of the forum quietly moved elsewhere under the pretence that we're bring invited to a new one. Sort of like when teachers get all the fucking nutter kids rounded up the week before the local authority come to check up on the place and tell them that they've won a special competition to spend a whole week at home.
