A Question for the 'older' Irish Gooners

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

hi all
just logged on and read the posts

db10 nice story about your grandad !!!

its good to hear we have moved with the times and sure we can drink and have the crack together now

pity they arent many irish lads playing with the gunners these days

sure they must be some young lads good enough to make the grade
sure we have the biggest school boy league in europe here in dublin
and there is a big push on technical football at a young age as well in ireland now.
so hopefully in the next 4-5 years we will have a green gooner playing in the famous red and white kit.

up the gunners!!!!!

Good points about Doyle there Gibbo. He isn't the best technically but he does know when and where to run and he will put it in there old skool. I always look at players like him and wonder what they'd be like after a year or twos coaching by Wenger to improve the technical side of their game.

Le Boss must be the best man manager and technical coach in the game at the moment. Just look at all the "good" players he has moulded into "great" players... Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Henry, CashleyCrunt, Clichy, Toure, RVP, Pires, Ljunberg, Sol.

And the players he "improved" technically and who's careers he extended... Adams, Bouldy, Keown, DB10 (he didn't really improve DB10 but he extended his career), Parlour, Seamo (again like DB10).

Just working with the man day in day out must be amazing. Not forgetting Pat Rice. Although I think he needs a defensive coach in there to assist with our leaky defence...

I think Doyle is a great player.

He's in my EPL Fantasy Team. :D

And he is good for Ireland too. :D

I hoping he scores a heap on the way to helping the team qualify for Euro08. :D

The reasons why the Irish support the English sides are simple. I rather contentiously say that despite no longer being within a political union with Britain, the Republic of Ireland is culturally intertwinned with the rest of the union, for these reasons....

1) If you ask anyone who are the largest ethnic group in Britain you'd think of either the Afro-Caribbeans or Asians, when it is actually the Irish, who have never been subject to immigration restrictions in the UK, even after independence. This has lead to a high amount of intermarriage and offspring indistinguishable from the rest of the UK.

2) The most watched TV stations in Ireland is not RTE but ITV and BBC, hence the following of the English leagues.

It is considered that the Irish have a better relationship with the English than the Scots or Welsh, despite the bloodier history.
