The Poppy appeal is something special.
I buy a Poppy every year. And when my money hits the bottom of the collection tin, it doesn't make a noise.
We all owe a great deal to our servicemen and women who fought for our freedom. And the ones who are serving today.
In World War Two, my Dad wanted to be a tail gunner on bombers. He told me that he failed the aircrew exam because he spelt the word "cylinder" wrong. The best mistake he ever made. Had he passed, I probably would not have been born.

My grandpa went for the infantry but they refused him as he had an injury to his hand and had to fire the rifle with his third finger instead of the second.
So he went again the next week and they turned him away again so ended up as an Air Raid Warden.
My great uncle was in the army, he had a firefight with a German across a gully. The German fired first but my great uncle returned fire with a Bren gun. He missed, but the thing has such a rapid rate of fire that the German legged it.
one of my grandfathers was a marine and spoke of the war to me just once (showed me a bloody great SS dagger too) only found out at his funeral that he was wounded on 6 separate occasions. i was in awe of my grandad.
my other grandfather was an engineer, i never fully understood what he did because the war did terrible things to him, he was never right and i never really knew him. it is because of him and thousands affected in such a similar way across the country and the commonwealth that i give every year and pin my poppy to my bag. it makes me proud to have to physically cram a coin into a collection box overflowing with donations.
it makes me even more proud that our club wore theirs as well

Was a great idea well done arsenal, and all those who do anything to remeber.
Had great uncle who fought in both wars who i never knew. But was told an amazing story by my brother in laws gran about world war two. She lived in plymouth during war time and one afternoon was making her way home from somewhere (sorry cant remember exactly where), when the air raid sirens started going, she was too far away to reach home but she started to run in that direction, she couldnt see anyone to let her in as most had quickly got inside, she started hearing explosions, and took cover in a random doorway. She said the covered her face and lay in a ball for over an hour, with all kinds of horrifying explosions and load noises around her. When it all finally stopped she opened her eyes and got up, she had no idea where she was as almost everything around her had gone, only a few building around her were standing including the one she had sheltered in the doorway of. It was a mirricle she had survived and one of the most amazing stories ive ever been told. Cannot even comprehend what it would have been live to live during those times.

We are all so lucky to be able to do what we want these days. Who knows what would have happened if that *word censored* Hitler or his son/daughter would have done if they were ruling right now.
People had to deal with so much back then, Jews had their families taken away from them and killed, we all go on about the problems we have, but most o the time they are nothing to what people had to cope with back then.
