Time for a megaphone to get the singing going! (23/8)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Atmosphere at the Emirates

Post by Rainham Red »

The noise at the Emirates is not as good as some other grounds but traditionally Arsenal fans for some reason are quieter but the Club doesn`t help by having rubbish pre-match entertainment. However, this can be overcome by the club replaying the noise from the crowd over the PA (this is already done by some other clubs). This of course would generate a much better atmosphere. Then of course we need a decent anthem so I suggest GARRY OWEN which was used by the US 7th Cavalry,if you saw `They Died With Their Boots On` you will know what I mean.Yes I know what happened to the 7th Cavalry but there hasn`t been a Red Indian attack in Islington for some time. It`s a real clap along tune just what we need as we head for the Premiership title.

Never ! :x

That would be almost as bad as those morons from sheff weds and their 1 song band !

I remember the Club introduced drums for a short time in the \euro games at Highbury which also went down like a lead balloon!

It's a bloody awful idea. The last thing a big club like Arsenal needs is some tosser with a megaphone. We would be the laughing stock of the entire League. The only thing worse would be playing music whenever we score a goal like Bolton do.

I'm sick of listening to this crap about RedAction and the RedSection anyway. If they were so interested in creating an "atmosphere" then perhaps one of them would like to explain why they were singing over the top of "Wonder Of You" at the Fulham game. Is it because it was someone else's idea so it doesn't count?

As for those who pine for "the old days" the atmosphere in the days of standing was not all it's cracked up to be. You would get a good atmosphere (by good I mean loud and fervent and hostile) at the big games, but against the Charlton's and Luton's of the World it was quiet and dull, despite standing and The North Bank. We also used to play in front of fairly small crowds which would indicate that a lot of those at Ashburton are not that steeped in history (that is not to decry their credentials as fans, but merely to point out that football existed before Euro 96) so many people won't have a clue about atmospheres in the days of terracing. To illustrate this point - the crowd for Norwich City on 01/05/89 (first game after Hillsborough, 1st playing 2nd) was only 25,000.

I think it's time for The Gooner to move on from the atmosphere debate as I've been reading about it in the magazine for over 3 years now.

Like i said this is a problem that needs the co-operation of supporter/fan groups (i personally dont want some tone deaf prat singing through a megaphone!) And lke i also said we need to include MORE fans in atmposphere generating schemes - Not just the Redaction section (that isnt an attack on Redaction btw as they do a great job) as there *ARE* others who want to join in making some noise but for several reasons feel inhibited form doing so.

I was having a few drinks the other night with a couple of Man U fans ( I know!) and funnily enough we got to talking about this very subject.
they were saying that the same thing is happening to Arsenal that happened to them. That the atmosphere at most games is is dull to say the least, due to the fact that the true fans were being priced out of the game by the newer
corporate crowd.

Old news I know. But that is the reality of the situation. These punters are never going to generate any kind of decent atmosphere.

I would love to see Ashburton Grove become a hostile fortress, like a frenzied collosseum where the opposition feel like they've been thrown to the lions.

But its not happening is it.

One of the Mancs said to me,
"Arsenal is like an old worn out Bra, No cups and crap support !"

As they were pissing themselves and I quietly fumed, I had to concede
that they had a point.

Maybe the only times we can look forward to GREAT atmosphere is on
away trips.

Odd thing is the atmosphere improves for the big games - is that because a lot of fans only go to the ''big'' games or is there another reason??

These three (big) games last season - Spuds, ManU, Chelsea - all had this in common - more sections (lower tier) were standing up for the enitre game.

I think that is the case & it's always been like that
For example i know someone wo's sold off his season ticket to someone as he can't keep going to the games as he lives Essex & it's hard for him
But he said when the games such as Chelsea, Utd, Liverpool & Spurs come over then he will go for them which doesn't suprise me
dvbrisgooner1 in what he says is correct as i wouldn't to hear someone on a megaphone saying 'give me a A' etc all the time as it will take me off the game
I was at the England game & thought that the fans in the first half were really good with the singing & silmair songs they sung like we do whenever at the Arsenal, i like the idea of getting bags, cards whatever it is on our seats to hang up before each game & holding up when they come out which will look good
Supporters from whoever can put them on the seats a number of hours before a game (bout 5 odd dunno) & it's something to keep saying 'oh thats when i went to the Portsmouth game they had this on my seat' because badges (matchbadges) are rare now only in the CL they do onecos the old bill stoped it
So for me bags on our seats at certain parts of the ground is what would look nice with a message on them which could be decided among ths supporters 8)

Block 6/the singing section is absolutely superb, but I think it's now completely full with season ticket holders - in fact, the entire north west corner seems to have barely any tickets available for silver and red members.

We definitely need more than one singing section, preferably in the opposite corner of the ground - Block 19 right next to the away fans would be electric though I guess the club would probably never go for that! Another singing section in the opposite corner would definitely help with atmosphere though, as our new ground is just too big to work acoustically, the sound from Block 6 just doesn;t carry if you're sitting in the South end of the stadium.

North Bank lower should simply be full of singers.
