Sell Van Persie for £10M?

Quartz, I've always seen you as a wise man in your comments. You usually bring some moderation, some objectivity to a debate... Except when it comes to Rvp! God knows I love this player, and god knows how much you hate him. But I must say your continual rant on him is starting to be annoying.

Now he can be the biggest asshole in the entire planet, he's still a great technical player, and he's still the main reason we're not right next to our spuds collegues in the table. We ask him to score goals and play football, we don't ask him to be Mr. Nice guy.

So I suggest you start looking for your wise self again, and recognize that right now RvP is simply vital to the team.

However I agree on the fact that we might loose him and other players this summer, weather we want it or not.

What is all this talk comparing losing Van Persie on a free to that of Flamini?

Flamini did not prove himself until he entered the final year of his contract. At the start of his final season not one person would have suggested selling him for a decent price because we wouldn't have got one for him. That's why bloody Birmingham were interested.

Van Persie is already proved as a class act so to lose him on a free would be 100 times worse to losing Flamini.

I've said it before and nothing I have seen so far this season has changed my mind. Van Persie is one of the top 5 strikers in world football today. The goal he scored against Liverpool this year could only have been scored by one other striker in the Premier League. Torres. You will not see a better goal this season.

Ask your mates who support other teams which Arsenal player they fear the most come game day and right now they will nearly all say Van Persie.

When everyone on else is fit I believe our strike force goes Van Persie plus one. He is essential to the immediate future of the club. I am optimistic he will sign a new contract. I wouldn't contemplate selling him even for £25m.

And what about 5.5m for Diarra - the most hideously underpriced of all our sales

Didn't we get £5m from Pompey as a sell on clause? That would bring the total up to £10.5m. Not bad for a player we had for only 6 months and who didn't play very often and apparently was worse for team spirit than Kolo and Gallas joint birthday party at Wacky Warehouse.

Trust me Frenchgun and Irish Gooner, I am not keen on this player.

He would be ok as third choice, but not as first choice for a club like Arsenal, we can do better!

He is overated by so many fans, because he scores eye catching goals.

Yet he is not consistent enough for us.

He too often has a poor first touch for a player supposed to be a "brilliant technical player".

He is selfish in his passing.

He has poor temperament.

I agree that Adebayor and Bendtner are in poor to average form at best, and so of course we need to look at Van Persie as a starting player, expecially as Eduardo is just returning from long term injury.

Yet I would love to sell Adebayor, Bendtner and Van Persie and replace them next season with better, hard working, physically strong and fast, clinical finishing players.

We already have a selection of "Number 10/Second strikers" such as Arshavin, Nasri, Ramsey, Diaby (at a push!), Cesc, Rosicky...

..now let us add top notch clinical finishers to help out Eduardo.

Van Persie has talent, but he is just not on the level of a Bergkamp, Henry or Wright.

Don't worry Foxy. We've always got Jay Simpson, who has scored twice in 8 games and apparently did a wicked bit of skill that was highlighted on Match of the Day!!

It is not so much the bringing in of three strikers that is the key, as the buying of one top notch striker to replace those three, plus the shoring up of midfield.

That will give is forward selection, if all players are fit, of:

Eduardo
Nasri
Arshavin
Walcott
Simpson
Vela
Rosicky
Ramsey
Barazite

When I say forwards I include strikers, and the second striker/number ten role who can play deeper, like a Zola or Bergkamp.

Of course, not all of the above will be fit all season, and some are inexperienced at top level.

So definitely we need to add to that with a strong, tall, fast clinical player.

Plus, we need two defensive midfielders.

This will bring the best out of Cesc, should he stay, or Wilshere/Denilson/Ramsey/Rosicky etc who will be our creative force in the middle.


I have not jumped at an argument on this one, but after four seasons of watching Van Persie I have made my mind up.
He has never formed a decent striking partnership either.

I am also unconvinced that Bendtner is good enough to play for a top four side.

I also think that Adebayor was a very very good last season, offering both goals and work rate.
This season he looks much diminished, does not offer work rate, and is only average for goals, plus gets offside too often.

If I am out of sync with the rest of the members on here, so be it.
I remain convinced of my argument, not out of stubborness, or a desire to wind people up, but out of honest conviction in my assessment of RvP.

It may happen, but I think he is just too individual in playing style to ever form a true partnership.
He remiains the cage footballer from Rotterdam, fighting off tough tackles from street players.

The way he plays for your national team gets good results from him, on the right wing.

But that is in a 4-3-3, which Arsenal do not play, and at a slower pace than the lightning fast Premier League.
I doubt he could be a right winger in the Premiership, and I prefer Walcott or Arshavin in that role for us.
