Our Stewards

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Everyone has their opinion on the clubs stewards and everyone is entitled to make their point, all I do know is this.

I do the job because I love the club, if you don't believe that then...thats your opinion.

I have not once in 16 seasons had a complaint about me or any of my squad. If you guys have such grouches about stewards....complain.
In the years I have been there, the turnover has been huge.
I am a Gooner, my kids are Gooners and my whole family are Gooners, we live and breath Arsenal. I as a teacher have numerous Monday morning dodges from Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool fans...and I fight my corner.

And why do stewards tell people in the back row to sit down even if nobody is next to them or infront of them. :?

Its a shame we don't have more stewards like yourself who actually support arsenal.

Sammy can you answer this please. :?:
Do you want the official answer or for me to make one up, becuase I would have thought it was obvious why people are told to sit in an all seater stadium......whether I agree with it is irrelavant......facts are simple...it is within the rules of the land

But for a youth cup game the stewards could let off and thats the problem some stewards have no common sense what would happen if they allowed someone to stand at the back (as they do at every ground) during a youth cup game? nothing
I can only sympathise with you on that, but the rules that apply to the first team applies to any game played at the Grove. FA guidelines have to be adhered to, and yes you do see the rules being ignored....however, in my capacity as a steward NO ONE has ever complained. I just wish that the way these threads are worded didnt have an issue with me. I do the job because I love it.....

Funny thing is that in all the years i went in the Clock End i don't even remember seeing a steward (obviously were a few about but they certainly didnt draw attention to themselves). Now the fuckers are running round everywhere, waving there arms, shouting and pointing at people. Whats the point of them all? There was never a problem at Highbury so why do we need 900 at the new ground :banghead:

Why do we need 900 stewards for a crowd of 60,000?

That's ridiculous.

Roughly 1 steward for every 6 supporters.

Tell you what. Stick the excess stewards in the away section. Make THEM sit down and shut up!

And, while I'm on the subject, DO NOT EMPLOY SPURS SUPPORTERS AT OUR STADIUM, they must love giving shit to Gooners AND get paid for doing it!!!!

i think you'll find that is one to every 60 supporters not 6!!!!

the majority of stewards are placed at turnstiles, exit gates, car park etc & do not actually see the game.

the stadium needs almost 700 stewards to legally open - they employ 900 to allow for sickness/holidays/unavailability etc
if they did not have enough stewards they would not be able to open

with bradford & hillsborough being so recently in the news, i am suprised that anyone is questioning the number of stewards!!!!!!

Cocked up with the decimal point.

It still seems , IMO. to be an awful lot more stewards than we used to have at Highbury, even when we had standing sections.

If the law says we need 700 at the Grove, then that's fair enough.

What about the question of MAKING AWAY SUPPORTERS SIT DOWN, the same as WE have to?

it's the same at every stadium!!! ive been the over half the away games this season & every game stood the whole time & did not get asked to sit down once - i think it is just too difficult to get away fans to sit down - so they ensure the aisles are kept free. It's not just at arsenal - it's all stadiums!!!

Actually, I already knew that! :-P

It doesn't make it right, though.

Away fans can do what they like.

Home fans have to sit down and shut up.

so you would like every ground to employ a large number of extra stewards to steward the away end & have constant running battles with the away fans trying to get them to sit down??

As someone who goes to both home & away games, i accept that at a home game i have to sit for alot of the game (not all) - but that at away games i get to stand the whole time.

i think you have to accept that we now have all seater stadiums, & until that changes you are expected to sit & will be requested by stewards to do so - small children & the elderly also have a right to go to football matches & actually see the game.

You say "away fans can do what they like" - this is arsenal away fans too!!

Do you want stewards at away grounds to try & get arsenal away fans to sit down? i don't think that would be a very popular result.

two wrongs don't make a right!

Sammy mate I agree with the things you've said. I too attempt to apply common sense before taking action at a match and have only ever got fans wishes and well being at heart.

Fact of the matter is folks, that lots of the rules and regs that we have to work with aren't even made up by the club - they're law! And as Sammy says, if anyone witnesses improper behaviour by a steward then report it to the club.

My best advice for those that attend matches regularly, is to introduce yourself to the team of stewards working in your area. Many of the stewards will be there permanently, so they'll be aware of any issues you may have throughout the season.

I'm the first to admit that some stewards act without engaging their brain, but we're not all the clueless, moronic, egotistical nazis that some would have you believe!

Sammy if I work in your block I'll be sure to say hello mate!

Look forward to see you SS (irony with the Nazi theme we have lol)

Anyone else who'd like to approach me feel free.

DB10 knows of me...I am sure he can vouch as he has before for my credibility.

And what Silly says is true, we often as stewards are seen as public enemy number one, but a lot of the time we are spoken to like crap, have threatening behaviour sent our way, and the air of 'I have a season ticket and therefore own the club' mentality makes for an atmosphere where we are driving away stewards. AND LET IT BE KNOWN...you complain that there are loads of Spurs fans working at the club, well......the simple thing is...as Silly states...INTRODUCE yourself to the stewards on the bulkhead you enter, I will chat about anything to anyone, and I do it with humour and for the desire to see The Arsenal succeed!! Then good Arsenal following stewards wont leave in their droves to be replaced by stewards who expect abuse....from you guys!

Brought it on yourselves, no sympathy. Luckly for you, you don't pay to watch football. It works out at about £40 a game for me. Imagine paying that out week in week out, only to be told how you can behave by some jobsworth steward.

I have been following Arsenal since 92, home, away and in europe. Next season i will be knocking home games on the head and one of the main reasons for that is the stewards in our ground. Granted their are other reasons such as the ground itself, the people in it and the general feeling that i have had my trourser pulled down an raped everytime i set foot in the place. Nevermind though i'm sure Tarquin from Surrey will be there to take my seat.

Going to football used to be all about getting behind your team and having a laugh. Unfortunately you are not allowed to do either of these anymore (unless of course you stick to the acceptable levels set by the club and enforced my the stewards)
