The Wonder of Who?? (1/10)

However, I quite liked the way they picked out two people who were in the cheap seats (at the back of the upper tier in ice hockey) and "upgraded" them to the best seats in the house at ice-level with nice comfy seats - sometimes it's even a sofa I'm told. Perhaps the club could offer something similar as a prize for a fan at each game picked out by the cameras singing along to the anthem? A seat next to Wenger on the bench maybe?

Little advertised as it was, the club have already done this. The guy they picked out is even allowed to sit on the bench next to Wenger for at least the next 3 years.

The lucky winner - Alex Song.

I don't sing it, as I don't call out the players surname. Because it's all a load of contrived nonsense.

If we have to have an anthem, it has to be Good Old Arsenal by the 1971 Squad.

In fact why was 'Wonder of You' chosen? Because our statistics show that Elvis is a global brand and has x number of global fans and x number of Elvis fans will become Arsenal fans if this becomes the anthem blah blah blah......

Typical condescending bollocks. Typical Americanized shit that David Dein was so keen on lumbering us with. Now he's fucked off, maybe these kinds of choreographed crowd bollocks stuff can fuck off with him, let us get back to singing our own songs.

I've glad that they don't put words on the screen, it would be an even bigger embarrassment than it already is.

The main opposition to this seems to be from people who are annoyed that it is "contrived". I think the club should be applauded for trying to do something. As far as things being "contrived", what do you think all of the RedAction initiatives are if they aren't contrived?

I really believe that this will catch on more and more - I had a text from a young fan a couple of weeks ago asking what the song was as he wanted to learn the words. I'm sure he isn't alone.

what bollocks.

What the fuck has that song got to do with Arsenal?

Nothing that's what.

It's literally the brainchild of a 'marketing expert' employed by the club

At least Gerry and the Pacemakers came from Liverpool, hence the reason why they sing it. At least Z Cars was set in Merseyside, hence the reason why Everton play it. At least Man. Utd fans spontaneously sang 'Always look on the Bright Side of Life' around 1991 and regularly sang it, before the club adopted it.

This song has BUGGER ALL to do with Arsenal.

No-one at Arsenal ever sung it before. It's literally 'hey guys if we tell you to sing it, it will become a tradition and we'll be just like Liverpool'.

It's inauthentic
It's plastic
It's...well....as Plato would have said......BOLLOCKS.

If you want an anthem to sing, that the fans know, that the fans will sing, that the fans have always sang anyway, that's captured on vinyl and can be played at the drop of a hat it has to be GOOD OLD ARSENAL FOR FUCK SAKE. Get your scarfs out and sing that one.

That is our song, not fucking Elvis

Im with you. Its a crime the club dont play Good Old Arsenal before the game. In this age of football, youd want something to remind you of Arsenal, its history and its traditions before the game - especially with all these new tag along fans from the home counties and places like Sussex and Northampton popping out from under the woodwork.

Its bad enough that we've left Highbury and we dont sing like we used to. I remember hearing Highbury stadium erupting with songs at half past two on a Saturday afternoon - and i could hear sining from the top of St Thomas' Rd!...but now you want to get rid of an Arsenal ANTHEM because some once upon a time yuppies think that the song is not good enough for them and went some random Elvis song! Like I said before, if the song 'Good Old Arsenal' is not musically credible for you, then I can have the same conversation about Elvis!

Dont kill off this Arsenal anthem because of your own musical agenda....and Elvis was NOT the king!

I actually agree that Good Old Arsenal is far more appropriate, but it's not going to happen.

As far as Gerry and the Pacemakers go, the song was first played in a football context at a memorial service for the Busby Babes. It was still sung, almost universally, by football fans all over the country right up to Hillsborough when it became more synonymous with Liverpool FC.

It will if you kick up enough of a stink. Like the 'Wonder of You' isn't gonna catch on if I can't be bothered to sing it.

In fact if Arsenal fans decide to sing 'Good Old Arsenal' loudly in unison while that song is played, someone might get the message that it is far more appropriate.

I'm from an era when people didn't wait for a cue from the PA to sing.

Mate, I hope you're only twelve years old because your knowledge of football history would be embarrassing for anyone older.

'You'll Never Walk Alone' was the Liverpool anthem well before Hillsborough. It was written on the Shankly commemorative gates, and he died in 1981.

I don't know whether it was played at the Busby Babes funeral, but if it was this was in 1958, five years before Gerry and the Pacemakers covered it. It had no scouse connotations then, it was merely a song from Carousel.

YNWA from 1963 was particularly Scouse, the Beatles were bigger but they belonged to the world. Gerry remained Scouse.

As far as English football is concerned it's the Liverpool anthem and everyone knows it's the Liverpool anthem.

Firstly, I'm not your mate.

Secondly, my football knowledge is obviously quite in depth, hence the Busby Babe fact. With regards to YNWA I probably phrased that wrongly. I never said it wasn't the Liverpool song, simply that after Hillsborough it stopped being heard in other grounds (with the exception of Celtic Park).

You mention in your original post about how a club song should have some relevance to the Club, and you cite YNWA being recorded by a Scouse group as a reason. How do you explain Delilah being adopted by Stoke City?

At the end of the day there are always going to be disagreements when things like this are tried, but starting to get lairy when soemone doesn't agree with you is not the way to go about it.
