He has bottled in on so many big occasions and the ladyboy free kick at the grove last season will haunt me foreverIn my opinion almunia typifies the new Arsenal......where we used to set the standards now we are, as a club and a team, ok but no better and it is shameful to witness a once great club represent itself like this
In fact, I'm almost certain if we had any of those suggestions in goal, we'd be having the same argument as none of them are that wonderful either!
The standard of goalkeepers in world foorball is, from what I've seen, shite compared to a few years back. ManUre have never replaced Schmeichel and we've never replaced Seaman.
I know Almunia isn't great, but even Cech and Reina look shite to me, so reluctantly I've accepted Almunia is probably the best we can afford at the moment. Yes, he's a handicap and it'll probably cost us matches (and possibly trophies) but what can you do??? - we tried Lehmann and he was shite, and now it's Almunia's turn.
Eventually, we'll get lucky and find a new Seaman, but until then we'll have to make do.
Would that be the same Lehmann that won a title as an Invincible and got us to our first ever European Cup final?
Yes g88ner Mad Jens made high profile errors but I'm not having that he was shite for us.

exactly, Jens made some blunders, but it was all part of his package.Magic Hat wrote:Jens the 49er, Jens the guy who won us an Fa Cup nearly singlehanded and whose defiance against Liverpool may have saved our season, Jens the guy who had Baby Face of Man U have head in hands with a world class save, the guy who broke a cleansheet record in Europe?
Yes, that's the Lehmann.Kevinho wrote: Would that be the same Lehmann that won a title as an Invincible and got us to our first ever European Cup final?

Sorry, but although he was hugely popular, I don't think he was ever that great, to be honest.
He had a wonderful team in front of him, and he was capable of wonderful saves... but he was also capable of mistakes, and in my opinion we've never come close to replacing Seaman in the same way ManUre have never replaced Schmeichel.
Lehmann was one of my favourite players, buy Christ... the amount of heart attacks he gave me was ridiculous!

I think they may have you on that lehman comment g88ner
I loved mad jens as a keeper and would have him in the team ahead of the spanish waiter every day of the week and twice on a sunday
To be honest if we are going to accept almunia's fcuk ups are going to happen as long as he is number 1 then why not play a young keeper like joe hart or whoever ? Almunia is 32 or 33 years old now so lets face it he aint going to get any better so personally I would be more willing to accept a young keepers fcuk ups as part of his development towards being a top keeper than to accept fcuk ups from a keeper that will never ever be anywhere near top quality.
By the way in case I forget......almunia for england

Anyway, you say you'd be happier with a young 'keeper who makes mistakes as part of a learning curve, but the abuse Flapianski gets on here suggest that's not the case! - Flappy may well become a very good 'keeper, but people would not accept his inclusion ahead of Almunia yet... that's for sure!

Almunia is generally a decent 'keeper who fucks up from time to time... it's a case of the grass being greener on the other side, whereby people suggest other average keepers even though I doubt we could do much better than Manuel! (sad but true, in my opinion!

Lehmann was good. For about 2 seasons. Then he was fucking tripe.
Beatles tripe.
He cost a lot of points and because of a great team he got away with it. Once the team went to shite Lehmann was exposed.
I'm sure as Oasis are great, that Almunia would have excelled amongst the greatest Arsenal teams as Lehmann did.
Saying that, they both weren't good enough.

Sorry I'm not having this. The 2005 FA Cup final says to me Lehmann was not shite. As does the unbeaten season. Not to mention the penalty save against Villarreal, the save from Solskjaer in the 06/07 season at OT, the save against Raul at Highbury to pick a few.
Lehmann commanded his box miles better than Almunia and for me he had that big game presence that reassured the team in front of him.
Any attempt to place Almunia even close to Lehmann is an insult.

The fact is all Goalkeepers make errors and when they do they invariably cost goals and as such are highlighted more than outfield players.
Seaman was referred to as "David - I don't do freekicks - Seaman" in a 'Talking Reds' Editorial in the Gooner, at the end of his career. But it happens.
Nyaem from the half way line anyone ?????????
Pat Jennings, Bob Wilson and dear old Jim Furnell used to foul up too.
The problem with Almunia and Fabianski is that they tend to pick the big(er) games to do it, so it gets noticed.
The solution is far from apparent even with our limited resources.
