DROP ALMUNIA

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The penalty was a massive rush of blood to the head to try and win a ball that Almunia was always going to be second to and more crucially had no reason to try and win anyhow. Rooney was running away from goal at an angle and on his left foot. There wasn't any support so he would have had to hold the ball up. Poor judgement by Almunia.

The second goal was worse though. Forget Diaby's header, no matter how inexcusable it was, and remember that if Blondie had three steps forward he would have taken the ball at chest height comfortably.

Obviously it Diaby was at fault but even more guilty is a goalkeeper that stays on his line because he sees that a team-mate had a free header. That is hiding and shirking his responsibilities.

Let's be clear on this, Almunia ia an average at best 'keeper who is very lucky to be at a club of Arsenal's stature. The guy is a liability and ishould be nowhere near our number one shirt.

A great'keeper wins games aand points for sides, an average one tosses them away at crucial moments.

Convince yourself if you need to that Almunia is good enough but ask yourself if in twnty yeqars time his name will be up there with Jennings and Seaman, even Lehmann?

The answer we all know.
As Gooner has said nobody is saying Al's anything special or up to the level of great keepers we have had in the past, it's just that some of us don't believe there is much out there that we would buy that are worth replacing him with.
Everything you have drawn attention to about your thoughts on his mistakes at the weekend and his weaknesses generally apply to the vast majority of keepers in the premier, there is not a keeper alive that hasn't made the mistake Al made by bringing Rooney down, they all do it now and again some of them regularly.
If you focused as much on the keepers you have mentioned as you do Al i think you would find plenty of ammunition to hammer them with with regards commanding their area, even without watching them as much as i have Al i have seen numerous times when they fumbled the ball or completely missed the ball when attempting to come for high balls and i guarantee if you watched them closely you would see numerous occasions that they should have came for the ball and never.
When it comes to other teams keepers with the odd exception the grass isn't as green as it appears to be on the highlights of them when their little errors go relatively unnoticed to a non fan, but their great saves are memorable.

Diaby: My own goal despair

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... spair.html

The midfielder gifted Alex Ferguson's side a 2-1 win on Saturday by heading into his own net and then missing a great chance to level.

Diaby, 23, said: "I have to forget it. I made a silly mistake and it's difficult to explain what happened.

"The goalkeeper called out to me to leave the ball, but it's all my fault.

"Even when I look back at the images I ask myself what happened, and I tell myself that it's just not possible.

"I was so wound up and soon after I rushed my shot because I didn't apply myself properly."

Diaby still feels Arsenal will enjoy a good season. He added: "It could be the right year for Arsenal.

"I hope to play in a more central position. I prefer our 4-3-3 system as I don't play in a wide role."
