Seeing as we had a thread for that ridiculous sport of NFL, we most certainly need one for one the best sports on the planet.

The National Rugby League grand final is this Sunday, and my beloved Parramatta Eels take on the heavyweight Melbourne Storm...

To put it in a bit of context...Parramatta haven't made a final since 2001 (I was there, we were favourites, we lost it before half half time...it hurt) and haven't won a final since 1986.

Melbourne will be playing their 4th consecutive final, having won it in 2007 and lost it in both 2006 and 2008.

Melbourne go into this match favourites (probably deservedly) but I have faith in Parramatta. :barscarf:

The Eels were amongst the bottom three on the ladder for most of the season, and weren't even considered a chance of playing in the finals until the week before the regular (league) season finished. So its been a wonderful underdog story.

And as a side note, you might want to note the newfound support they've gathered along the way. I was at home matches throughout the season where the crowds struggled to reach 9,000. In one particular instance (and this made me distraught at the time) the home crowd was a sea of red and white...Parramatta's colours are blue and yellow.

So as much as I hate a lot of these bandwagoners, I think all of you foreigners should support Parramatta and watch the match - it is being televised in the UK!!!

(DB10 I can however, excuse, seeing as he may already be a fan of a certain side from Brisbane...)

And for those of you who dislike rugby league based on what you've seen in England - watch this match. You will understand that what is played over there pales in comparison to the true sport played here. The English Super League is to the NRL what the Scottish Premier League is to the English Premier League.

I loved League as a kid and played for my school. I supported Easts (the Tigers) in Brisbane back in the 1970's when they had the Morris brother (Des and Rod) and Johnny Lang playing for them. We lived just up the road from them in Coorparoo and I remember being at the game when they won the Grand Final against Valleys with a late try.

Have to say I've lost touch with the game a bit but you are right it is a far better quality than the English version.

Also a far better game than that crowd of repressed homosexuals play called Rugby Union!! 8)

Never liked Melbourne so go Parramatta!! :barscarf:

spent 2001 living in sydney, and got into the sport while their. i lived in stratfield, and would go to a game every week. id mostly seen the eels, bulldogs and the roosters, as they were all fairly easy to get to. cant say i ever puck a team to support. i to was at the grand final which the joey johns inspired knights, done 1 on the fancied eels. i,ll be watching at the weekend, cant say i,ll be supporting any1, but def storm are the favs, and with billy slatter, prob the best player in league, hes the ace card.

Good to know you were at the same game! Had you been a Parra fan you may not remember it so fondly though...

Billy Slater is definitely brilliant, but Parramatta's own fullback Jarryd Hayne is this this year's player of the season. Being slightly bias, I'd also say Hayne goes very very close to being the best player in the world right now.

Watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFYNcpPf3dk

Now you see, this is a sport of true athleticism. All of the skill, speed, strength, and then just some pure brutality in the mix around the 7min mark.

So in a very nice secondary battle in the Grand Final this Sunday, Slater and Hayne will be up against each other.

I wouldn't want to be the selectors having to pick between the two for Australian fullback.

Yeah Flash doesn't like the league version of the game cos you're only allowed 6 tackles!
