he played very well against Man Utd.

Was he playing in the last 30 minutes when ferguscums lot started to come at us cos I certainly didnt see him ? Like it or not he has gone missing in 90% of the games where teams have actually really attacked us and for any DM that aint good. I have said often lately that he has def improved but he still isnt good enough to play in a 4-4-2 which should tell you everything about his shortcomings

By the way being glad that he was brought on instead of diaby is no great recommendation either - I think I would rather have stepanovs than diaby

That 40 yard back pass for a corner against the y1ds was a reminder of what Song can do!

Lets not get carried away he was poor last season and has improved a lot but that now makes him average instead of poor. We would be better with a bit of cash spent in Jan.

Burnsey I havent dismissed songs improvement at all and actually credit him for improving in the very paragraph that you quote :? As I actually said in that piece I have actually given him a lot of credit for improving lately and actually said that he was immense v the scum last week  Maybe your pre-conceived perceptions of boredom have blinkered you from actually reading my posts correctly ?

What I have also said though is that he still isnt good enough to be first choice for a club like ours, lacks physical presence and has too often been found wanting against the better teams which ironically is the games that we need him most

apologies if misread!

the game agaisnt manure 10 other men went missing, and we were undone by a penalty and an own goal.

if we had have won that game 1-0 would you have still rated song the same?

im not saying he is in a class of makelele or viera - but who is, other tha essien where is their honestly a world class defensive midfielder who we can afford

Song has been fantastic this season and has been improving since the second half of the 07/08 season.Changed the match when he came on yesterday. One of our best players so far and will be a big miss in january.FACT.

I think Alex Song has been magnificent this season, I always think its a bit stupid to blame him whenever we play someone decent and concede a goal as he is one of the only defensive minded players we've got in midfield.

Agreed, Song has been very consistent since late Feb/March this year. He still dithers on the ball from time to time, but he's generally a very solid if not dominant presence in the midfield.

With the number of ball players we've got he performs a more than useful role breaking up opposition attacks and laying off the ball to more talented teammates.

A lot of folks bang on about him not being world class, which at the moment is true. However the point is that he doesn't need to be surrounded by the likes of Fabregas, Arshavin etc, all he needs to do is protect the back four and give the easy pass to Cesc, which he has been doing, so fair play to him.

The last point about Song is that you tend to forget how young he is 21/22, and considering how much he's improved in the last 8 months, how good could he become?

Song is the 2nd or 3rd best CDM in the Prem. Get off his back.

And who says he couldnt play 442 with Fabregas? I think he could do so if we needed. Last year is no measurement of this year. Hell, Cesc was pretty bad last season compared to this one.

I would go along with that 100%

It's a shame that some fans seem unable to give praise as quickly as critcism, I saw one poster cite Song's bad miscue that gifted a corner to Alkmaar the other night as a reason 'not to get carried away'. I was at the game and that was nigh on the only mistake the guy made.

I've been going to games since the 70's and I thought I was quite tough on the players, but some folks on here are at times ridiculously hard to please.

Let's see him over a season like Cesc then, who has proved it over a season.

I would like nothing more (not correct  ) than to see Song as player of the season, as it would mean we must be close to winning major honours.

But let's keep everything in context of the start to the season, and see what happens as we go on, without getting carried away.
