Debate in Parliament about safe standing at football matches

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

i think they would charge less to stand,,, terrace behind the north goal would be great,, going to throw out a name as well,,, how about calling it the NORTH BANK
ITS EASY DONE,, LOOK AT GERMANY ,, TERRACES FOR THE BUNDESLIGA AND THEY PUT SEATS IN FOR EURO FOOTBALL

I think the only draw back with that would be another few thousand held in a queue by police for the station, other than that it would be fine

I think I started a thread about this in the summer, but in case you didn't read it, my view on this is that I'd love to see the return of standing. I think that a way of doing it would be to adopt a similar methtod that I encountered at a college (American) football game whilst in the States.

At Autzen Stadium, everyone stands but they can sit if they want, but there are no seats. They just have bleachers, which are essentially long benches which go around the whole stadium. It's good because it means you can squeeze a few extra people in there, but then for competitions which require seating (Champions League), it can be easily converted.

Autzen Stadium; Impressive looking, but for the record, all American sporting events have a shit atmosphere!

We read every word :!:

What happens when some people want to sit and those in front want to stand? It seems there are enough people who really want to sit and enough who really want to stand to adopt the German solution of having one end of terracing or 2 smaller sections at both ends, which could be adapted for European games.

Maybe I should have been clearer - my 'suggestion', if you like was more along the lines of introducing bleachers in to a designated standing area, as opposed to the whole stadium.

The idea of standing areas must, surely, be welcome for everyone who goes to football. For those who want to stand there would be an opportunity to do so. Meanwhile, for those who wish to sit (like me) we wouldn't have to put up with some twat jumping to his feet every time Arsenal cross the half-way line.

The new stadia in Germany are a perfect example of safe-standing areas which can be converted to seating for UEFA competitions.

The fly in the ointment where our ground is concerned would be that Arsenal were allowed to build a stadium which houses 60,000. I suspect that any attempt to shoehorn further numbers in to (and out of) the surrounding area would meet serious opposition from the NIMBY brigade and from the filth.

I imagine you didn't sit in the clock-end. Did you ever stand on the terraces?

I did sit in the Clock End on a few occasions for League Cup ties, but I CHOOSE to sit so my season ticket was (and is) in the East Upper. I did my apprecticeship on the terraces, like everyone else, but I prefer to sit and watch the game with my Dad.

When I go away from home I expect to stand throughout the game - that comes with the territory. Similarly when I sit in a Lower Tier seat I expect to be on my feet a lot - but for £46 a game I quite enjoy sitting down with an unimpaired view of the game.

Last season at home to Everton the tosser in front of my Father jumped up as Van Persie ran up to hit the free-kick, so Dad didn't see Arsenal's only goal - the guy never stood up again after that (he was too frightened to do so) and has now moved his seat...hurrah.

The point is that terracing would be great as those that wish to stand up and watch the game can do so without ruining the view of people like me and my Dad.

I know that if AG had all the seats the same size as Highburys ones then an extra 20,000 would go each week
Problem with AG is that it's not like Highbury, you can walk round the whole stadium now so it will be hard to control the standing area
