Baptista's substitution

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Wiltord was a club record £13M and was/is treated badly by a lot of gooners. He wasn't a truly great player but he scored over 50 goals for the club, also did well when filling in on the right side of midfield. He did a job, Probably not a £13M player but gave his all for the club.

Baptista is streets ahead of Reyes in terms of effort and commitment, but for me he just seems clumsy with a very poor and heavy first touch. Granted many others players took a year to settle but I can't remember many of them showing such poor technique on so many occassions. I just can't see his style fitting into our subtle passing game. I also don't think he punches his weight despite his nickname.

Given those doubts I think we'd be better investing the £8m or so elsewhere. Lets face it that would be almost half of Arsene's reported summer budget.

Of course I sincerely hope Julio proves me wrong between now and May!

Have to agree with trevheff i think we should let both reyes and baptista go and invest elsewhere. We need a winger so thats one player we need to get the beast is to much of a central player. dont wont to get off the point but maybe invest in another defender coz we are short of them the mo.
Baptista has done well for his first season in england. His goal scoring rate does prove one thing tho...its much harder to score in england then spain!
Just because you score twenty goals on the continent dosent mean you can score loads here! Its a different game and even though i like the guy i think that baptista should go.

P.S. REYES CAN FUCK OFF TOO THE WINGING LITTLE PRICK!!!

I dont think its harder to score in the Premier League than La Liga. Its a matter of adjusting. The EPL provides different sort of chalanges and it takes a player time to adjust to that. Look at Shevchenko, he has scored so many goals in Seria A, where the mentality is to defend and not lose, yet he is having problems in scoring in an more open EPL. As far as Baptista goes, since his move from Sevilla to Real Madrid, he hasnt shown the same form. With him i have a feeling hes more of a small team player who could be dangerous against big teams.

Great way of putting it, TF5

His post-Euro 2000 inflated pricetag was high indeed and this led to an over-expectant critique of his every touch at times(by some Gooners).

I will consider him a great Gunner always

Well he has been banging them in for Lyon even if they currently don't have much competition in France.

Baptista we need to give him a little longer to adapt.

I should point out folks that my earlier post (which I've since edited) was not putting down Wiltord at all, rather the situation. This saw him leave on a free which meant we got no return on £10/13 million.
