Cesc staying for life

augie wrote:Sorry 2 smooth but I have to respond to your last commentin which you stated that Arsenal are big enough to have world class players and I would like to ask you in who's eyes are we big enough ? In the fans eyes most certainly we are but in the eyes of the players, the media and even the boardroom ? I dont think so. Every single time the barca's or real madrids of this world come knocking our players heads are turned and the commitment of the players in question slides and we end up selling them(on the cheap I might add). The media will always big up the likes of the above clubs and even manure & the scousers above us so they dont see us as a big enough club to hold worldclass players either. Lastly our beloved board  Why is it these people never tell the big clubs that are sniffing around our players to sling their hook ? Why is it that they never go after any of these clubs when they illegally approach one of our players ? Seems to me that they are intimated by these "big clubs" and cower down to them so again this is not the attitude of a big club.

Much as we all like to think we support a massive club good enough to stand toe to toe with europes finest I think deep down we know that we need to win a champs lge or 2 before we will rightfully feel that we belong.
Not for the first time, I agree 100% with Augie. Couldn't have put it better myself. I reckon we'll get a few more years out of Cesc and then he'll move on. If he wants to go home, you can't deny him that. We should all just be grateful that we got to see a player of his talent play for our Club and enjoy it while he's here!
I agree with augie too but it's probably almost the first time I have... I reckon Cesc will stay with us for another 5 years or so and then (when he will still be only 25) will join Barca. Hearing him say (Henry-like) that he wants to stay until the end of his career only underlines the point.

But that's not pessimism, that's just recognising that footballers have very short careers and will want to achieve a range of things in those careers. If I were Cesc, I would want to play for Barca at some point in my life if I could.

As for what this signifies about Arsenal, I've taken great pleasure seeing Arsenal over-perform year after year. Older fans remember how crap we were in the late 70s to late 80s, and how dismal it was being an Arsenal fan then, so seeing what has been achieved in the last 10 years is fantastic. Although the size of the fanbase and the club have grown in recent years, we're still smaller than Man U and Liverpool. Ashburton could change that over time but not yet.

The true European elite is Barca, Real, Juve, Milan, Inter, Bayern Munich, Man U and Liverpool. If we can battle our way into that group over a period of years, great, but let's not pretend we're there now. We should just enjoy what we have, including having one of the great midfielders playing today.

At the risk of being accused of being completey delusional, he's said it more clearly in the Sun today.

I say again I think it will depend how we are doing v Barca. Le boss must have ambitions to win back to back titles, CL a few times, and even try to emulate the Manure treble. If we are doing that sort of thing in 2/3 years then why would Cesc move, especially as he seems to really love London.

I can dream  :D

On this particular point 2 Smooth I dont feel I am being Dr Doom and yet again I feel that I am being pulled back into the whole being realistic v pessimistic debate. Anyway I too feel that from Cesc's point ov view the lure of his boyhood club must be huge and I cannot blame him for that. I truely hope he stays for another 10 years but if he doesnt I will still feel fortunate to have seen the most talented player of his age ever to play in the premiership

Jaysus, I actually agree with augie on this one...

Just on the point above; I think another problem we have is snobbish behaviour by the board. They seem to think that all players should want to play for Arsenal more than we want them to play for us, and if they show a sniff of not being totally committed then it's the old "get rid of him" syndrome. It's as if the board would consider it vulgar to be seen "chasing after" a player... :?

DB if you are surprised by the fact that you agree with me here you can imagine how I feel

Seriously why do some members appear reluctant to agree with me on any subject :?: Have I been secretly blacklisted for my opinions :?: It shouldnt be the case cos I am a pillar of sense and my intelligence knows no bounds

I was only kidding augie, but you knew that...

I agree with a lot of what you post on here to be honest, particularly with regard to the board. On that subject, I just think they are the lesser of two evils.

I'm actually a bit of a pessamist (realist) myself when it comes to Arsenal. As I say - bitter past experiences!! :(

I keep thinking I'm gonna wake up and the last ten years won't have happened, it was all a dream and the horrible reality will be that Bruce Rioch has managed us into relegation, the spuds have won 3 CL's, we are currently managed by a combo of Terry Venables & Martin Hayes and our average gate is 22000...

Jaysus... it could so easily have happened.

Good to see the damage sustained to your spinal chord a while ago hasn’t affected your typing ability, DB. Still, might want to stay away from IHH’s herbal remedies in the future. 8)

Just say no!
