Anyone English & Good Enough?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

ANY ENGLISH PLAYER WITH GOOD TECHNICAL SKILLS WOULD MAKE IT AT ARSENAL. PROBLEM IS THERE ARE TOO FEW OF THEM ABOUT AT THE MOMENT AND THOSE THAT ARE GOOD ENOUGH COST TOO MUCH AND ARE ALREADY AT BIG CLUBS - AND CHELSEA!!

I DON'T THINK THERE ARE ANY DOUBTS THAT MOST GOONERS WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HAVE THE LIKES OF GERRARD, RICHARDS, TERRY AND ROONEY (MAYBE EVEN JOE COLE?) AT THE CLUB, BUT LIKE TONY SAUNDERS HAS ALREADY SAID, IT WOULD PROBABLY MEAN PAYING OUTRAGEOUS PRICES AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE JUST DON'T DO - EXCEPT FOR THE £12M FOR WALCOTT AND £17M WE PAID FOR CRY-BABY REYES!!

Micah Richards is the only english player I would want at Arsenal. Too many english fans(hope I'm not classed as a racist for that) believe the hype about stevie g - making thundering runs 2 or 3 times a game doesnt make you a great player in my eyes and watching xabi alonso playing alongside him for the scousers makes gerard look like a donkey. I would like to see ben foster at Arsenal but of course he is injured although I think I'd still be more confident with him in goal than our current subuteo keeper almunia(after the manure game he should have a long stick shoved up his arse that stops him galloping off his line into no-mans land).

I know most fans on here dont give a fcuk about the english national team so I can ask this honestly without people thinking this is a wind up - why do ye believe that ye are one of the favourites to win every major tournament that comes around ? I mean historically england have only ever won one big prize and that was played in their own back yard and correct me if I'm wrong here but they havent even got to another final. It appears to be accepted by most Gooners on this forum that it is the foreigners that have made the premiership so exciting and without them it would probably crash back into the 1980's again. As some of you have already stated both on this thread and on previous threads english players do not have the technique, commitment or discipline necessary so (a)how could your national team ever excel &
(b)how could any of them be good enough to wear our famous jersey

Anyway I suppose what would I know about international football sure I'm only a thick oirish paddy/mick - we are just happy if we qualify for the finals(and that wont be happening again anytime soon)

Another one of them who just happens to be my hero says something similar in the Guardian Tuesday.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/ ... _were.html

Chippy said "A lot of tournaments passed England by when it was a lot easier to qualify. They didn't qualify for the World Cups of 1974, 1978 and 1994 and their record in the European Championship is pretty poor as well." He was too polite to mention England losing to Ireland in 88.

But Brady finishes on a cheerful note. "Look, the academies haven't been going for 10 years yet. It is only now, and over the next year or two, that we will see the real worth of the system. And I can tell you that I've got a very talented bunch of boys coming through now. And they are mostly English."

The only English players I would add to our squad are Micah Richards, John Terry and Shaun Wright Phillips.
As for could they play the Arsenal way? I dont see why not. I dont think fat Frank could.

I know he's a wanker but I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Rio Ferdinand. Pairing him with Toure would be perfect - both can play the ball, are intelligent (on the pitch) and have pace, and Ferdinand is good in the air too. He is a shithead (like his brother) but then so is that slow, serial-cheat, John Terry. I quite like Jonathan Woodgate too. (By the way, I also think having Sol Campbell back, now he's remembered how to defend, would be good.)

Assuming the point of this debate extends to British and not only English players, here's a controversial one for you: Gareth Bale. Not for our left-back spot of course, but he'd be great as an option on our left-wing.

I've always considered Shaun Wright-Philips to be an Arsenal player who hasn't realised it yet, and not just because of his step-dad. He could definitely play the Arsenal way.

In goal, Scott Carson or Ben Foster would be ok, but I still think the better keepers are from elsewhere (USA or Italy).

I like Micah Richards, especially his character, strength and pace, but he often makes mistakes and miscontrols the ball (admittedly only to recover the ball a moment later). I'd like him to join one day but I'm not 100% convinced of his quality.

Up front, Rooney of course would be great. Owen would add nothing, and Peter Crouch?? Give me a break.

The problem with English/British players is not just a lack of technical ability, it's also their weak characters. Too many of them just love the money that comes with their job without really caring about the game, and still less the fans who fund their salaries. They don't have the guts to try playing abroad to improve their skills.

And as for augie's question:
why do ye believe that ye are one of the favourites to win every major tournament that comes around ?
the answer is we don't, it's just a stupid game the tabloids play every time on the build-them-up-to-knock-them-down principle. It's a game only a few fans of Preston, Hartlepool, Swindon etc fall for.

Wouldn't say no to Terry if he wants to come over to a winning in a couple of years time

Agbonlahor is another one. As a rightsided midfielder he'd do just as good, or in my opinion probably better, than Eboue.

Talking of Villa, I like Ashley Young a lot, having him zipping into attack from the left flank would be great.

From agbonlahor the ridculous to Young the even more ridiculous.

These players are both average, mid table engishh premiership players - which is why they are suited for Villa and being "touted" as England players of the future.

I though we were looking to be shopping in Milan, not the Mile End Rd :!:

All about the suroundings, We got players that we rate highly but probably would look pretty avarage if they played for Villa, Boro or Spurs ( ). We won't know if they'd be good enough until they get a chance at a club like ours.

Fancy putting some money on it? I say he'll have 10 England caps by the end of 2009. £20 good enough for you?? (I also think he'll be playing at a bigger club by then.)

Perhaps they would look better in Kew Gardens then :)

10 England caps is no sign of quality - in fact, playing for England full-stop!

Two words - Carlton Palmer :)
