As Wenger has said a thousand times, he won't spend money that he doesnt have on players that arent better than the ones we currently have. We dont have the power or the funds to go out and buy any player under the sun. AW's recent record of value for money is better than most. Look at Man City, for example, buying Arsenal rejects for inflated sums, who they are likely to either sell a year later, or stick them on the bench dreaming about their days in red! I hope that Wenger buys this summer, but ONLY because any purchase that IS made is likely to be a good one! :barscarf: Any likelihood Man City will let Hart go?

Ah that old chestnut!

so in January there were NO central defenders available other than Sol Campbell???? in fact nobody else to add depth just INCASE gallas and tv5 got injured and we finished the season with Song/Slivestre at Centre Half (oh yeah that happened)

And there were NO centre forwards better than Bendtner (bearing in mind RVp was injued, Eduardo is now made of glass)

As is well known the January transfer window is always very tricky. A lot of players are overpriced, with teams very reluctant to let anyone go half way through the season. Then when you add to that the fact that most decent players play for decent teams which almost certainly qualified for champions league and are therefore cup-tied. Are we really willing to pay over-the-odds prices AGAIN for someone who cant play in the Champions League? I'm pretty sure AW isnt just flat-out refusing to buy players that are available and within budget....

Then that will be how he will be remembered by me and many others.
Speak for yourself you ungrateful toe rag !!

AW will be remembered as an Arsenal GREAT :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:
Thankyou Aaron, you can always be relied on to come up with something constructive or witty.
You really are lost on here, and should consider a career in satire.
I think any career would be an improvement on being a professional dick.

For me to consider spurs anywhere near us they would have to finish in the top 4 for more than one year. Everton finished fourth remember, thats the easy part. Staying there is the hard bit

It's not a case of them being near us, they would only have to finish above us a couple of times, and what we have achieved in the past will be history. I don't think it is unrealistic given the current contrasting investment in players between the 2 clubs, that they could indeed overtake us in the lge.
That is why it is imperative that Wenger improves the squad significantly and also recognises his own shortcomings in terms of tactics.
As you say staying there is the hard part, but you should also recognise that slipping out of the top 4 now could make it very difficult to get back, as the pool will find next season.

apparently they might not get ahead of you but only because there is a big anti-spurs conspiracy. Some crackers from a couple of spurs fans on our site http://www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.php?t=491088

Highlights of their moaning include:

"It's the FA that are corrupt cnuts not really (many) gripes with you.

It should never have been allowed to happen, they have a fit senior keeper and emergency loans only are meant to kick in if there are none. It is lasagne gate all over with the cheating Gooner FA and it's not just."

"A *word censored*, really? Because he wouldn't sell our players cheaply and actually wanted what they were worth. Wow, why couldn't he have been an inept chairman and sell our players cheaply just to please Sunderland.

And the second bit is bollocks. We have a lot of money and are very profitable. We don't have to sell anyone, but we will, because theyre not good enough"

"Well to be fair, we don't need the money. I don't get where the idea we are not rolling in money comes from?"

Someone else- "It can only mean one thing - The FA are obviously conspiring against Spurs as they don't want them to get 4th place  "
Spurs fan- "It's happened before...."

Someone else- Aye, they obviously went and made sure all the Spurs' team meal was only half cooked so they'd contract food poisoning. The FA really are ingenious"

Spurs fan- "Well no, but they made us play the game with a completely unfit squad. Where were our emergency loans.

It's also slightly coincidental that an Arsenal man made the decision from highbury"

   you really are a nasty lot you know, corrupting the FA and all that, just to keep the mighty tottenham down- its obviously nothing to do with them being shite!

I recall a few years ago (Lasagne-gate era) the tabloids clambering all over the alledged North London powershift.

One of the redtops went with an ariel photograph of Highbury surrounded by Cockerials (In the Dad's Army fashion)

Needless to say, it never happened.

For Tottenham to EVER me considered a bigger club than Arsenal they will have to match the succes this club has had full stop. Its ok finishing above us for one year but that does not mean that the whole world will stand up and say whoah Spurs are a huge club arent they  Chelsea may have won the league in the past few seasons but i would consider Liverpool a bigger club than them purely based on their past succes in Europe and domestically.

to be honest I would rather we looked up at the gulf between us and the top 2 than waste our time looking down at our neighbours

anyone think the gulf between us and the top two is smaller than the one between us and the scum? I dont!!

If you listen to Martin Peters what he was asked was if Spurs could ever get out of our shadow. He said yes. He may be right. It is possible that Spurs could finish above us in the table at some point in the future, I mean we've had a couple of close calls recently and it was only 15 years ago or so that it happened last.

He also went on to say that they won't be challenging for the title soon and that getting their new stadium in place will be vital to be able to compete with us and the other big boys.

I think the Liverpool comparison is a good one and there are lessons there for us. What do people think has been the cause of their long period of not winning a title? I think managerial upheaval is the main reason. Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish were a promotion from within dynasty that came to an end. They haven't had a manager anywhere near the quality of this succession.

I think we should be worried about what happens when Arsene goes. Who of the current board would have the expertise to find and choose the right manager?

Well if/when Wenger goes I'm up for the rumoured Pep swap? Perhaps he could hide Messi in his suitcase :P
