ARSENAL AND YOU

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

Didn't grow up with my Dad so wasn't into football at young age, once I got to school, few of my good friends, some I still watch games with, were and still are Gooners, I followed suit and thank them for it.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?

19 years

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?

Not living in London, I never even attempted to go to a game until 2006/7 so it would be Charlton 4-0 first game of 2007, very cold weekday evening game.

WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?

Ian Wright Wright Wright. 8)

WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?

Never got to

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?

Been to: Blackburn 6-2 of last season or Porto 4-0

TV: Everton 98 (remember going nuts in my bedroom when Adams scored) or Inter 5-1

TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?

Met Ashley Cole in a local nightclub when he was still a gooner, seemed an ok bloke back then :awnker: did let me have a glass of his champagne though

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?

Home : owned - 96-98 all time 69-78

Away: owned 94-95 all time 88-91

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?

Having never been, I can only say what I saw on TV, final day will always live in my memory, the buildup, the game and meaning behind it (pipping Spurs to 4th) and the final ceremony, so emotional.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?

I love an Eboue chant but did like Adebayor, Adebayooorrr, he used to like coach trips, but not anymore...from Man City home game last season.

WHERE DO YOU SIT AT ASHBURTON GROVE?

If i can get tickets for blocks 4-7, then there, if not, wherever I can.

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

Just lucky I guess as my old man is a spud !

HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?

My earliest recollection is at about age 6, when other kids at school liked West Ham (cup final 75) and everyone else suported Liverpool (well it was south london afterall )

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?
v Coventry at home in 1980 - a 2-2 draw but it was on match of the day that night

WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?

Brady, then no one player untill Rocky and then Wright, who made some of the most painful matches to watch singlehandedly exciting.

WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?

I stood in the North Bank for the most part, got a season ticket at age 17 in 1988 (good timing eh) then moved to the East Lower the year before the North Bank was demolished

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?

Anfield 89, 2nd row of seats by our standing section. Our first title in my living memory and what a way to do it.

TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?

Met Bob Wilson and Charlie George doing tours of Higbury / Emirates, Dixon,Winterburn, Groves, G Graham at the Anfield 89 reunion night last season. Rocastle, Adams, Richardson and George Graham at a signing of the end of season video for 1989. Alan Sunderland in a pub !

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?

1989 away for obvious reasons. Home would be the classic 70's shirt

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?

Always the first game of a new season, walking up the North Bank steps, past the "make money with Arsenal" girls and glimpsing that magnificent pitch and ground again.
Favourite home match possibly the last day of ther North Bank with Wright getting a hattrick to clinch the golden boot.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?

"You'll never play for Arsenal" to David Platt, when he had to wear an Arsenal keepers top after taking over in goal for villa one night match, we won 5-0.

Best away fans chant was at 98 cup final - the magpies singing "Peter Reid's got a fookin monkey's heed" and "Peter Reid eats banana's with his feet" on the tube after the match.

WHERE DO YOU SIT AT ASHBURTON GROVE?

In the family enclosure more often than not as I try and take my daughter along whenever possible, usually attend 6 or so matches a season

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

I've always been a football fan, although me and my twin brother are the only football fans in my whole family. In 2000, my sister came back from holiday in Italy and brought two fake football shirts for me and my brother: a Man Utd shirt with Beckham and the Arsenal home shirt with Overmars. I already liked Arsenal at that time, but Overmars had just signed a contract with Barcelona. So I chose the Beckham shirt.
I was never really a fan of Man Utd though, because on Dutch television they used to broadcast Premier League games every weekend and most of the times it was Arsenal because of Dennis Bergkamp. I started to love Arsenal more and more when I saw those beautiful shots of Highbury, and the team was magnificent of course.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?

About ten years.

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?

Arsenal - Middlesbrough 2-0, both goals scored by Cesc Fabregas (April 2009)

WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?

Dennis Bergkamp. His goal in the World Cup quarter final against Argentina is one of the first football memories I have.

WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?

Never been there to watch a game. :(
First time I was at Highbury was in October 2003, when I had a school trip to London. Went to the stadium with a few classmates, but we were not allowed to have a look inside the ground. They told us we should come back on Friday for a stadium tour, but that was impossible as we were going back to Holland that day.
Last month I went to Arsenal v Fulham at the Emirates and two days before I finally got into the ground! One of the gates was opened, so I was lucky. Couldn't get onto the place that used to be the pitch, but I was very happy I could finally walk inside the old stadium. I think they did a good job with the Stadium Square project, it looks fantastic.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?

That would be White Hart Lane in 2004 when we won the league. I also loved the Final Salute in May 2006 because my fellow-countryman Martin Jol decided that he and his team should eat some lasagna the day before.
My favourite European games are Inter 5-1, Real Madrid 1-0 in the year we got to the final and the 2-0 victory at AC Milan in 2008. Because I just hate those three clubs.

TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?

I'm a journalist for Goal.com and sometimes I go to watch Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer, where Marc Overmars is in the Board. Seen him a few times but never spoke to him yet.
Last year I had a little chat with Michal Papadopulos of sc Heerenveen, just after their Europa League home game against Hertha BSC. Papadopulos scored twice, but Heerenveen lost 3-2. He was a bit moody because of the defeat, but he immediately began to smile when I asked him about his time at Arsenal. He played only one game for us, a Carling Cup game against Wolves at Highbury, when Cesc became the youngest goal scorer in our history.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?

Home: 2006-08, the only red & white home shirt I have. I really hated the home shirt of the last two years.
Away: the 2008-2009 Anfield anniversary shirt. I also liked the 2002-03 away shirt, because that was my first Arsenal shirt ever. I still wear it sometimes. :)

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?

Walking into Highbury Stadium Square last month and the 'concierge' allowed me to have a look at the Marble Halls. I'll never ever forget that.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?

Last year October I was in Alkmaar, where I heard the Arshavin song for the first time (He's 5ft4, we've got Arshavin, bla bla :)). But the best song was 'I saw your wife in the window!'

WHERE DO YOU SIT AT ASHBURTON GROVE?

I'm a red member, so usually the green quadrant. Been to two home games at the Emirates so far: v Middlesbrough in april 2009 (block 122) and v Fulham last month (block 120).

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT SUPPORTING ARSENAL?

Saw a Sports Illustrated Article as a Youngster from the week we won the Double in 1971. Just was a really cool article and a really cool name for a team, and when public TV began broadcasting matches a few years later, recognized the cannon and found the team I wanted to support from them on – though the red shirt with white sleeves thing weirded me out then (Dumb yank)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU SUPPORTED ARSENAL?

Hate talking about age and stuff – but since 1978 really

WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST GAME?

December 1979 – Arsenal 1 Liverpool 0 David Price scored the winner

WHO WAS YOUR ARSENAL HERO AS A KID?

Alan Sunderland

WHERE DID YOU SIT AT HIGHBURY?

North Bank Lower and Upper – couple of times in the West Stand

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE GAME?

So many…but 2001 Arsenal 3, Villa 2 is really cool. I was watching with a work-mate who actually supported Villa so he was in great spirits at halftime crowing how they were gonna cost us the League again like 99 away, and I chortled now wouldn’t it be funny if THIS time WE came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 and that was the result that WON the League. I never doubted for one second after Henry’s winner in stoppage time that we would win the Premiership

TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU MET AN ARSENAL PLAYER?

Charlie George. It was on a tour but not a Legends Tour and we broke off following Chrlie after chatting him briefly before he warned us quite nicely that wasn’t proper and we ran back before anyone realized we’d gone fortunately

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE HOME SHIRT AND AWAY SHIRT?

The 71 Home and Away. Classic and perfect. Special mention to the 01 Away -the Captain Kirk shirt and my first Arsenal shirt I bought

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF HIGHBURY?

Just how it actually belongs in the middle of this neighborhood as surely as any of the houses of flats surrounding it. That’s how it always looked on TV and even looking from inside the stadium out to the surrounding streets. My first time over I ventured up Blackstock and then down St Thomas I think just to take some pics and sure enough I had no idea where the stadium was until it suddenly appeared right in the middle of everything like it belonged there all along. Still my favorite pic - all shaky because I was still so surprised and excited as I shot it.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST CHANT YOU HAVE HEARD AT AN ARSENAL GAME?

The one about Tony Adams and Caprice – you naughty boy you

WHERE DO YOU SIT AT ASHBURTON GROVE?

South Upper above some very cunty mancs they match I attended. HAVE SOME THEN YOU FUCKIN *word censored* RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HAHAHAHA
