Seriously though, whatever your thoughts on Djourou, I honestly don't think that Wenger spent £10m on Koscielny for him to be a bench-warmer. It just doesn't make sense, and would be a stretch even for the increasingly-delusional AW. Hence why I thought this question is redundant.

I’d agree with that. I’d be amazed if Wenger was willing to spend £8m or so on a CB he didn’t consider would be first choice. And he seemed reluctant to give Djourou a run in the team before even when the Gallas/Toure partnership wasn’t working. Would be a bit of a turnaround if he suddenly put so much faith in him now.
Agree with augie too that Djourou looked like he had the makings of a good CB but having missed out on so much development time through injury I’d be surprised if he ever becomes anything more than a decent back-up option. Having said that I’d also add that given how poor or how little defensive coaching our players seem to get these days he might not have stood a chance anyway, which is why I’d much rather we bought ready-made, more experienced defenders who’ve already been taught the art of defending elsewhere.

I can understand the point you are making there and I have to say that is a big big concern of mine too. Why pay 10m on a back up centre half when you are only prepared to pay 4m for a 1st choice keeper ? With any other manager such a move wouldnt make any sense but with wenger it could be just another of his wacky ridiculous idea's
simple fact is Koscielny has only played one season in the french premier league. the season before he was playing in the french championship. (league below).
We just spent £10m on Koscielny to be a starting XI centre back.
Djourou is complete shit.
In all fairness that is complete and utter crap - I have always felt that djouru had all the qualities to be a great centre half for us but seeing as he has been inj for so long I am concerned that he has lost out on that development stage. There isnt a doubt in my mind that as things stand he should be way ahead of koscielny (spelling that all season is going to be a pain in the arse ) who has admitted he is too lightweight and has no fcuking experience in our league and fcuk all elsewhere for that matter Why do people automatically assume a new signing is gonna be great ?
Spot on as usual mate.
I don't know where this Djourou hate is coming from, he has never even got a run in the side....

Oh I agree that Wenger probably will go with Kos, largely because of the point you make. However, the question was who would YOU choose? As I said, neither exactly fill me with confidence but as least Djourou has SOME experience in the PL...

Where did you read that Koscielny had cost us £10M?
I believe it is closer to £3M rising to £6M depending on appearances and trophies won.
I would go with a new signing such as Mertesacker, but out of existing players, with Djourou. He has more Premiership experience, and physical strength. As Augie says, he still has the potential to be a regular starter, but we need to see how copes after serious injury.
