Of the 1.7 million people who live in qatar, only 200,000 are native to qatar, most of the rest are asian migrant labour that live in shanty towns hidden away from the main cities.CraigPollard wrote:My biggest concern is how all this infrasture is going to be built. I dare say that the same practices will be put in place that helped to build Dubai. For those not in the know, it included sourcing labour workers from near by countries with the promise of a better life, only to then be stripped of their passports and forced to work tirelessly until the job was done (the slave trade in a nutshell).
It is illegal out there to work in anything over 50c, and ironically, work was never stopped. This may have had something to do with the governing powers and media never reporting the temperature to be anything over 49c - hundreds of workers dies building Dubai as a result.
Aparently the Yanks and the Aussies arnt to happy. TheAustralians aparently were not going to bid for the 2022 world cup untill activly encouraged by Sepp Blatter and the rest of FIFAArsenal 1991 wrote:Surely we have the power to break away. Didn't the Premier League do this to the FA? I think we should now do it to FIFA!!
I would love us to move away from fifa and claim association football back.
Im glad our bid chief isn't biting his tongue, he is saying what people are thinking.
If I recall correctly, Australia had already lodged its bid before Qatar too. Bin Hammam (spelling?) the head of AFC, and also Qatari, created the Qatar bid to directly compete with the Australian one, rather than support a fellow 'Asian' nation.stg wrote:Aparently the Yanks and the Aussies arnt to happy. Its a disgrace that they could be given the world cup.
I read a comment on an Aussie football site concerning the drinking sites...it basically said this..."confined drinking areas are well and good, but what will happen when you have all these races of fans (think Croats/Serbs for example) locked into these areas, drunk, and roasting in 50 degree heat?
Could be but probably wont, if south africa has taught us anything its that Fifa is very good at bullying host countries into writing a blank cheque in order to supress the ugly side of a country while the fifa circus is in town.Arsenal 1991 wrote:The world cup in 1994 was supposed to have made football (soccer) a mainstream sport in football. It is more popular now than it was but is it more popular than the 70s when pele, beckenbaur etc were there? I doubt it
Its just a load of nonsense really and the sooner Fifa is broken up the better.
The Russian world cup is not going to be pretty thats for sure, could be quite embarrassing for Fifa.
Wenger has my vote. when can he start there?Arsenal 1991 wrote:I saw this on the .com forum, top post:
Surely the Legacy argument cant be the excuse to give it to Russia..or Qatar..
Our Game in the 80's was a right mess, crumbling stadiums, racism, holliganism but we did something about it without the carrot of a world cup bid, we did something about it because people died at hillsborough and recognised that things had to improve. Surely we should be commended on this and achievement recognised with a World Cup. The success that has been achieved in our game has made us hated within FIFA because we dont play ball like they do.
Basically football is going down the pan for years and it starts at the top, untill FIFA are sorted out then the game will not improve, once splatter goes then Platini will take over and he is just as bad. Someone like Bobby Charlton should be head of FIFA...or maybe one day Mr Wenger...
I might be wrong but Muslims can't drink at all in Qatar and the rest of us can't drink in public.kingjayson1 wrote:I didn't really want to get into this but some of the posts on here are a joke.
I do agree that the poor labour conditions need to be looked into because in all of the Middle East its a problem. Maids and drivers are the norm on next to nothing wages, and builders etc on poor pay and poor conditions. Its something FIFA should highlight that is not acceptable.
Talk of stoning of women etc is pure nonsense, Qatar is one of the more liberal GCC states. Women can dress how they like so long as its not too provacative and alcohol is legal, yes its restricted in public but I am sure when the WC comes around there will be designated fan parks, hotels and bars just like the WC this year.
The whole WC experience for me personally is about a new country, the culture etc. The designs from Qatar looked impressive and the air cooling in stadiums does work.
No doubt there was back handers to get it to Qatar but to me FIFA is as corrupt as anything and most of the WC bids are likely to be bent I'd blame the almighty FIFA whom are meant to be the Home of Football. Sepp Blatter, c**t.
If that part is referring to my post KJ then it really wasn’t a serious comment, just an excuse for a shite joke to be honest.kingjayson1 wrote:Talk of stoning of women etc is pure nonsense, Qatar is one of the more liberal GCC states.
