hang on, what train are you lads getting? I know that alcohol is banned on supporters coaches and the likes, but you arent getting "supporters trains" I assume? Just the article says "Those attending this match by coach or train are reminded that it is an offence under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985 to carry or possess alcohol on coaches or trains being used for the principle purpose of carrying passengers for the whole or part of a journey to or from a designated sporting event"
Now, no doubt a lot of your lot will be on the same train, but just because a fair number of the passengers are using a particular train to travel to a match doesnt mean that carrying passengers to the carling cup tie is the "principle purpose" of the train? Surely the principal purpose of the train is to run a normal service between whichever stations you are travelling, and the fact that a lot of the passengers are using it to go to the match is incidental? The only time a trains "principal purpose" is taking fans to matches is if they put on one of the "football specials" but they are very rare nowadays
I'm getting sick of the way all football fans are treated like shit tbh. There is very little bother nowadays but still we are treated as if somehow we are all hooligans intent on bother. When you look at how much we pay to watch football its a fucking disgrace, lads are paying hundreds of quid for an away game- if you were to pay shit loads to go to the opera, or to eat at a restaurant, you would expect to be treated with a lot of respect but no, they still think all football fans are just pissheads after a tear up.
I got pissed off on the train from Edinburgh to Sunderland on Saturday (travelling for our ill fated Notts County cup tie). Got on and an announcement was made that BTP had ordered all east coast services that day be "dry"- I asked the conductor why that is and he said "because of the football down south" (I presume he meant in England). What the fuck- look at the fixtures on Saturday, there was fuck all other than the Millwall v Birmingham game that was likely to cause any bother, even Man Utd v Liverpool wasnt that day. The only "flash point" was when I pulled into newcastle central station because i was in my sunderland strip and had forgotten that their fans would be boarding that train as it continues to london and they had stevenage at 17:30, so there was a bit of abuse both ways, but that is no reason to ban alcohol all day
We also have the north east derby on sunday that has been moved to 12:00 just to try and stop the violence that was seen last time at the SoL- the games not on Sky, its just the police being *word censored*- at least make it 12:00 on a saturday FFS. That idea will backfire though because I, like many others, are just starting on the drink at 6:30 and if we win continuing until the nightclub shuts 24 hours later. Many places in the NE are split, some near to 50/50 between SAFC and NUFC (particularly the old mining villages) and having an early start on the drink, followed by a long time afterwards when the chances are one set of fans will be pissed off, is a recipe for disaster, some of the small villages/towns around there are a fucking warzone after the derby
All in all the way fans are treated is shite- I've been to Ipswich and had very little bother. Obviously the occasional arsehole but most of them were okay. Equally I have been to Arsenal in me sunderland strip and always found them to be a very good lot, always happy for a pint and a chat about football- the only problem being the lack of pubs that allow away fans in but thats hardly the fans fault. Two decent sets of fans not likely to cause any bother and the police have to go waving their fucking cocks around and trying to spoil people's days by not letting them pass the time with a quiet few pints on the train
Its about time people were more responsible for their own actions. Let lads drink on the trains and the coaches. If someone cant handle their drink and causes trouble, punish them properly. Don't go spoiling everyones day just because a small minority of fans might get drunk and become a "nuisance".
