Best chance in years

Post by Champagne Charlie »

Not since we were top of the table in the 07/08 season (before imploding) have we been considered true title contenders, yet here we are right in the mix.
It's been one of those rare seasons where nearly everyone's beaten everyone and whilst we haven't always taken advantage of the opportunities presented to us we still managed to pick up points to be within touching distance of the top.
Chavs are finally starting to show their age, they're struggling to pick up points and the departure of Ray Wilkins has definitely hurt them.
Citeh whilst being belligerent are squabbling amongst themselves, but are definitely giving the rest of the challengers serious food for thought. Wednesday's game will be another serious test of our title credentials but I reckon we have enough to see them off.
Spuds are bringing up the rear (what else would you expect..?) and waiting to expose any slip ups the others make, and it is that which makes them also dangerous foes as they are constantly laying down markers that they are aiming for top 4 again.
Then there's ManU. Not been at their best yet they haven't lost a game. Somehow they're getting the rub of the green and making good on Lady luck's charms. I expect them to lose at some point, but when is anyone's guess. The way the season has panned out thus far it could just as easily be Spammers as Chavs where they lose to. We've just got to be ready to pounce when they do.
Inspite of or despite the lack of big money investment in the squad we've done pretty well to be where we are. By rights we shouldn't. Not with the way we scrape the bottom of the barrel scratching around for substandard French 'internationals' centre halves and Championship quality French defenders.
Couple that with our inability to organise ourselves and communicate defensively (Wenger's words, not mine), a midfield who sometimes seem hellbent on neglecting their defensive duties and no Plan B, it is no mean feat that we are right up there. And all this without Vemaelen, and until recently goalkeepers who didn't inspire much confidence.
If we can somehow get through this month without too much fuss, get TV back and partner him with the fast improving Djorou, navigate our way through vital fixtures against the big boys (and Spuds) and don't drop many points against the smaller clubs then I think we'll see the confidence really course through the squad.
There are many bumps and turns yet and it's making for an exciting season.
I think we have as good a chance as any to be in there at the death, and who knows maybe snatch an improbable title.

Bring it on!

and what a great lift it would be to make a couple of quality signings in Jan. It would really be a sign of intention from Arsenal and put us in with a great chance......but it won't happen unfortunately. :banghead:

I think we should be optimistic.

If we can't win the Carling Cup from here then someone wants firing. We have a decent draw in the FA Cup. We've had the tough away games in the league, Bridge, OT, COM, with only really Spurs away the big toughy to come. I think we can forget about the CL... again. That's the players fault though so they only have themselves to blame for that debarcle.

We just seem too hit and miss this year. I think the Chelsea result was a bit of a false dawn. Chelsea are poor... as it the league this year in my opinion. We need to toughen up. Stop losing leads and close games out (Spurs and potentially the Villa game). The Brum result was a good one seeing as United could only draw.

Anyhoo, rant over. Head up - bring on Wednesday when hopefully we can add vital points against a title rival.

Who knows?

I think there's also an argument that the league has gotten stronger this year.
Mid to lower league teams seem to have strengthened and there hasn't been a massive exodus of talent leaving for Europe.
The only stand out player who left was Mascherano, I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Compare our league to the Spanish league. I thnk that league overall is weak.

Saturday's performance was very impressive, even more than beating the Chavs. We were strong everywhere. Wigan showed what we are capable of if we have a run of injuries, but if we are lucky with injuries then I agree we have a tremendous chance. But, a QUALITY signing at the back would give us an even better chance.
Yet again our hopes are being raised and I would exchange all of my cadburys selection box for the title and believe me that is a lot to give up!
Come on Wenger, prove to us that you also want to win it by adding that extra bit defensively.

No new signings but still we are hanging on Manure's coat tails.
And even Shava is looking like he wants a piece of the action!

I just wish he'd bring back Kyle Bartley to offer us some extra defensive cover. That Miguel kid doesn't look ready at all, and now Song is injured we can't feck around with only 3 fit CBs.

Anyboobs, the game is afoot fellas, the game is afoot!!

We've been here before though, only last season in fact. And every time I dare to get my hopes up the inevitable implosion follows, usually around the end of March when we throw it all away against relegation candidates.

I hope i'm wrong but part of me (most of me, even) still expects that to happen this year :(

Yes, it's not the despair that kills us, it's the hope, lol.
But it keeps us coming back for more.

Look – I don’t want to come across as a know-all here, and apologies to anyone that feels insulted by this, but some of the above posts are just a bit too silly and show such a serious lack of a decent grasp on reality that it’d be criminal to let them pass.

The crux of the issue is our SQUAD isn’t strong enough, and hasn’t been since 2006.

The reason we look good up until Feb/March or April in most seasons over the last 5 or so years is that we have the nucleus of a good team. But footballers are human – they get injured, they lose form, they get mentally jaded and physically tired.

Our problem is that when the inevitable injuries/fatigue/loss of form hit in the latter part of the season we do not have sufficient quality to rest those now tired/injured first choice players.

Rotation (to a certain degree) is the key to winning the league. But rotation only works if you replace a quality player in the side with (AT THE VERY LEAST) a competent player (but preferably another quality player), not with below average players.

We didn’t win the league in 2008 because late in the season we did not have the quality to rest/rotate any of our tired/injured first teamers. Odds on this will be a big contributing reason why we don’t win a league that is honestly there for the taking this year.

:(

I was waiting for someone to start this thread. We have been in a similar positon on more than one occasion, and not only for the lge but also the fa cup.
Wenger will however fuck it up (if he hasn't already by not srengthening in Jan) No sooner had the window closed, and we start to pick up injuries.
Expect more bad news on TV5 soon to add to those new injuries.
Cue Wenger fucking about with his starting line-up as the fixtures mount, and he assumes "rabbit in headlights stance"
I will say it here now and if I'm wrong I will never criticise Wenger again, "we won't win the lge, FA cup or clge, and if Wenger plays Eboue, Denilson, Diaby etc against Brum then we won't win the Beer cup either.

It's spherical actually! :proudtosay:

In truth we're only 4 defeats away from ending up totally trophyless this season. The reality is that the majority of those competition could end THIS month. :(
