As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I never took u for being in SA Mega  - i always assumed u in UK or an "Oirish" gooner.

As Quartz mentioned books, it gave me an idea - I have quite a few books on Arsenal but all i do anymore is just flip through them to glance at few pics, as i have read them numerous times.

As a birthday pressie, I'll gladly post a couple them to ya if u PM me your details.

Same goes for Palestinian_gooner.(Even though it not your birthday!!)

I'll send a couple each, but let me know if ye have any Arsenal books already so i dont send ones u already have.,

PS - Piss off anyone else that thinks i a soft touch and wants a free book - mega's and palestinians comments just got the better of me ...OK !!

Good man, Rossie.

For me it was my old man being a Gooner from the 1960s. We moved to Australia when I was about 6 months old in late 1967 and then The Arsenal won the double when I was 4 and the canon was on the papers in Aus and that got my attention as a 4 year old, but it was really when the Oirish lads started coming through in 73-74 that my old man got me really into being a Gooner, he always refered to them as an "Oirish club" ( ). And there is nothing as Oirish as an Oirish man abroad!

The best thing my dad did for me. Made me a Gooner. 8)

ive read some on the forum it either depends what side of london your living(north london i suppose, islington etc) that chooses what team you support or your family is gooners ; or you live in ireland and loves arsenal because you chose them , whatever it is etc etc.

but as arsenal fans who has followed arsenal hard from the history until now, what do you think of arsenal fans outside uk, like for example in sweden, a teenager started following arsenal when he was 14 years old when vieira played(this is just an example) until now we say he is 22, he dont knows a shit about arsenal before 95 .. is he a real gooner or just a "gooner"? hope you understand my question
There would be fans in London who know nothing of Arsenal before 1998.

I recommend reading thse books to get some history and context:

Tom Watt "The End" excellent book, to get an idea of fan culture at the club from 1913 - 1992

John Spurling "Rebels For The Cause" about the culture of the players

Phil Soar/Martin Tyler - "The Official History of Arsenal"

and

Brian Glanville - "Arsenal Stadium History" for an official in depth look at Highbury.
I'd also add "Highbury, the story of Arsenal in N5" Really good book, find myself re-reading chapters from it all the time.

your club should always pick you, but that doesnt mean you dont pick your club. Sometimes young lads will "support" a few clubs, but the one they settle on just feels right- I had a simple NUFC v SAFC choice, others from further afield have a massive choice, but eventually the club chooses you. When it just feels right, and when you realise that you could never hope another side wins no matter how bad your team becomes, then you know you are stuck with them for life, and there is no better feeling

I quite enjoyed that book too, but there are some really bad mistakes - such as the claim that Pires wore the number ten shirt against Tottenham on the day that David Rocastle died.

Where did that come from?

Mega, hope you had a great birthday yesterday. :barscarf: :barscarf:

I didn't know you were South African. Hey, you must know SWL then!

In answer to the question about choosing club/club choosing you.......I definately chose my club. Most of my schoolmates were chelsea. They dragged me up to London to watch them play, and get me indocrinated. A couple were west ham. They did the same.

One day I got on the train to London with the chelsea lot. I decided to go have a look at Arsenal. All by my lonesome. I walked up the steps to the Northbank. The stadium came into view. I did a 360 degree look around. Took it all in. And realised that I was home. :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:
Thank fuck none of my mates were spurs. :worried:

[quote="MegaGooner"]PS: I added a PS at the beginning so that I can safely assure all the readers of this thread that I am very pissed and should just leave if they don’t want to read any further.

I think I might be mellowing in my old age, but I had a serious look back at all the crossroads in my life because I turned 40 today. I’ve read what seems to be a meltdown on the forum recently (read the last few days), which with our fairly poor results and all the conspiracy theories makes for some interesting reading. I am on this forum because I enjoy the craic, banter and in general (trying) to be funny (which I normally fail at).

I will put my hand up and admit that I have been calling certain people WUMs, because in my book they are –wind up merchants- and trolls who only seem to post anti-arsenal “propagandaâ€
