As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

It smacks of desperation because we are desperate. When you have 3 of your goalkeepers out injured i would say that counts as a desperate situation. And let's be honest here, what team is going to let their no.1 and no.2 goalkeepers leave to come play for us at this stage in the season?
I'm not happy with Lehmann coming back, but i can see why he has to and why Wenger is going ahead with it.
MM99 - you are really getting into the habit of patronising every person you reply to!
Yeah, We can all see WHY he is doing it, mate. That's pretty obvious. The point is that Lehmann was poor 5 years ago. He is now older and slower. I have this awful feeling that this one will turn round and bite Wenger on the arse big time...
Firstly, i didn't mean to come across as patronising and i've read my post again and i honestly don't see how you can call it patronising. I think you're just being a bit too sensitive.
Secondly, if you can see why he is doing it then why did you say in your first post "Still cannot believe Wenger is going ahead with this".
Surely if you can see the reasons behind why Wenger is forced into making a move for Lehmann then you can understand why "Wenger is going ahead with this".
Just to reiterate, i too think Lehmann was incredibly poor towards the end of his stint with us and i am just as unhappy for him to be coming back to us as a goalkeeper, but i can see how we don't really have much choice as no other club will be willing to give up their goalkeepers to help us out at this stage in the season.

Aghh the joys, mad Jens in goal great value for our money, he might even be able to wake a few of our buggers up out there on the pitch.....

Sorry to butt in but I fail to see how he was poor in 2006? He was outstanding in the CL, played the WC and then played an average season which included that crazy match against United Arsenal won 0:1. I do understand that even a good/average season might look poor in comparison to the CL run and WC but I still don't get it. Poor because he made two mistakes at the beginning of the 07/08 season? I mean how many mistakes did Almunia make and even more importantly, how many did Wenger allow him to make again and again?
Also, Lehmann did very well at Stuttgart, he was certainly not poor in his last two seasons so I don't understand why some people think he could even come close to the calamity that is Almunia, even after 9 months without regular match pratice...

Lehmann poor 5 years ago.He was the best keeper in Europe.Just the 10 clean sheets in the CL
.Behind a back four which included Comedy Eboue,Senderos and Flamini

With all due respect Don that's too simplistic. Comedy Eboue, Senderos and Fimflam all actually had good performances in those CL games. We also played a very fast counter attacking game that relieved pressure on the back four. Lehmann did well in that run but it wasn't down to just him.

Why use Coco to qualify your defence of Lehmann. Too different keepers. Just because Wenger put up with Coco doesn't make Lehmann better than he was. It's well accepted by most that Coco is shite at best.
To answer your questions about Lehmann. The signs were there, even from the beginning that he was seriously error prone. Lehmann was a good agile shot stopper but his decision making was often poor and got worse. He made high profile clangers in big games. His push on Keane at WHL that resulted in the penno (could have cost us the unbeaten record, could have cost us the joy of winning the PL at the Swamp), his 30 yard headless chicken dash out to miss the fucking ball that helped fuck the CL quarters against the chavs, his stupid red card in Paris 06. That's just off the tip of my tongue. There are more. Towards the end of his time with us his nickname amongst many Gooners was "the clown".
All of those errors were the very things that Coco and Flappy get (rightly) slated for.
I think too many people look back on Lehmann with seriously rose tinted spectacles because he was part of the 04 unbeaten team and the fact he achieved cult status as a bit of a mad bastard.
Don't get me wrong. He was a good keeper, not great, but good, at his peak. But his poor decision making let him down too often.
But nowdays? Poor decision to bring him back. Would be better to try and bring in a younger 2nd choice GK from a smaller club.

It's a statement of disbelief, not a statement of not actually understanding.

I am sorry but calling someone who was awarded Europe's best goalkeeper and came 2nd in the World's best goalkeeper in 2006 voted by neutral experts (not to mention two clean sheet records in the CL and for the German national team in 2006) "just good" says a lot about the kind of spectacles you are wearing. Ridiculous.
Lehmann plays a high risk game that has it's undeniable values and positive effect but naturally IF he makes a mistake, which every keeper does, it is bound to be a spectacular error because his game is based on coming off the line. Lehmann always made a couple of errors of that kind per season but in return his teams, ALL of them, conceded few goals, got a solid defense and won stuff with him. Almunia does not only make far more errors, he also does not have any of the skill Lehmann has maybe with exception of the occasional good reflex.
The points that keepers like Lehmann and van der Sar can afford a couple of weird errors per season, their overall value exceedes those by miles.
And please stop blaming him for the CL final. He had the opponent running freely at his goal throughout the tournament and Arsenal should have never been there in the first place had he not been so excellent so I wonder what you expected of him in that scene?

Hold the fuck on there. You are telling me who I can and cannot blame? I was at that fucking final, I spent my hard earned money going to it. I'll blame whoever the fuck I want. I suggest you watch it again. Lehmann rushed out like a headless chicken, arms high, eyes closed and feet forward. It was a stupid mistake of the kind he tended to do in high profile games and it cost my club it's biggest honour. He fucked up. Again. Deal with it.
And to say we only got there because of him is ridiculous. Our defence and style of play were key contributing factors in that CL run.
And wasn't the UEFA GK award voted by EUFA magazine??! Was it a poll of readers?
