Happy May 26th 1989 day

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I Hate Hleb wrote:Ironically he'd probably be perfect for the current system we play: lone man up front that holds up the ball and allows the midfield players to get forward. Plus the guy was superb in the air. Agree with others, very under-rated by many at the time (probably inlcuding me and other gooners), but a superb player during most of his Arsenal career. 8)
I think most people also forget the way he adapted his game to accomodate Wrighty.

Before his arrival he was the main focal point, bagging goals galore and winning Golden Boots. He became far more of a provider for Wright winning the physical battles and letting IW8 take the glory.

I love this day. Just love it. Brings back nothing but great memories of that night so long ago (and the week-long piss up that followed). I was so fucking drunk that whole week my old man did a kind of intervention (before there was such a stupid concept) and took me aside and tried to get me back to work. I turned up the first day back still drunk! He just threw an arm around me, smiled and sent me to his jeep to sleep it off. He even brought me over a breakfast roll later to try sober me up!

Wow, I miss him so much. :?

Nice stories you two. I watched the game with my dad (who has now passed away) and feel honoured to have shared such a great Arsenal moment with him :barscarf: the look on his face when we scored the second was brilliant :)

Happy St. Mickey Day everyone :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:

On the 26th of May 1989
The Arsenal went to Anfeild with one thing on their mind
We will score two we wont look back we'll make that title ours
Forget the stats Forget the pain we'll win in their backyards
First it came to Smithy we thought we had a chance
But with 90 gone the scousers strong Anfeild danced a dance
But then it came to Mickey T the Arsenal number 4
Its up for grabs now, he made us proud and champions once more....

ooohhhhh good old Arsenal..... :barscarf:

I am not sure if this is right but was it Pleat co commentating on the game that night and he came out with some pony about it being poetic justice if Arsenal won the game but did not win the title and then Micky T pops in the winner what a way to ram Pleats sarcastic comments back down his throat and boy did i love lauding it over the **** in the pub, happy days they were.

Wouldnt be a bad idea to put this game on a rolling dvd in the changing rooms at Colney and the Bowl .....might just inject some pride into some "players" currently struting around in our shirt

Yes, it was indeed Mr David '£30 quid for a nosh darling' Pleat!

Guys, great stories about you with your Dad's and all these days bring back good memories and ones of those that are no longer with us.

Sure the old fellas are enjoying the day in Gooner heaven with our good mate Steve. Probably throwing wanker signs at the Heeb supporters up there if they are anything like you lot and Charlie Steve.

A fucking great day in our history and, maybe even more tha that, one of the greatest moments in football hisory and it was created by us..............Gooners!

Does anyone know the exact time that Mickey's goal hit the back of the net???

I know it was 91:26 on the game clock but what time of night was it?? From memory I think it was about 9:55pm.

Sounds stupid but I've never thought to find out before even though it is and always will be the best moment of my life. Followed by one of the worst when Mickey played that f**king casual back pass to John Lukic. Nearly shat myself as that rolled back . . . . . .

I'm already getting goosebumps just thinking about it - gonna raise a glass to George and the lads at about five to ten tonight!

If anybody wrote this as fiction nobody would believe it.
The top 2 teams in the league in a last game championship decider. Liverpool are going for the double. Arsenal have to win by 2 goals. Injury time and Arsenal score to clinch the title with same goal difference on goals scored. Unbelievable.
