I'm older but didn't get to my first game until '69.donaldo wrote:I'm a couple of years younger than FrankChippy wrote:BTW Donaldo, how old are you? I didn't have you down as being old enough to know that team.I'm 52
Went to my first game at THOF in 68.Thats why i am always banging on about the Anderlecht game

I wasn't at the Anderlecht game but I was at the Ajax semi. That was a classic too!

i kept a bad impression of ray kennedy because he missed at least three sitters in the FA cup final (i watched it again yesterday, for the 41238th timeChippy wrote:This is bizarre because Charlie George did fuck all apart from score the goal in the FA Cup final. Raddy and Kennedy won it for us up front. No mention of Kennedy in this thread so far. For us a brilliant forward but went on to be a midfielder for the bin dippers. Between them they scored 47 goals (raddy got 21). At the time those 2 were the massive favourites amongst us gooners.QuartzGooner wrote:I think we do not hear much of him because Charlie George, Frank McLintock and George Graham were higher profile players from the 1971 Double squad.
But Radford was a formidable striker.
I pretty much loved all of that team but had a real soft spot for Geordie Armstrong, as someone above said, a fantastic winger. and don't forget Pat Rice, brilliant defender and leader on the pitch.
Oh and we had Bob (gentleman) Wilson in goal.

and the more i see pat rice in an arsenal shirt, the more it saddens me to see how little respect we gooners show him these days (even older gunners who saw him win it all for us). the man is one of the biggest legends of our club.
I'm not one of those who disses Pat. For me there is only one person who must take responsibility!
Also I got tix to see us play Barca at Wembley in 90(?) from somebody who knows him!
Kennedy might have missed some sitters but we wouldn't have won the double without his goals.

cheers mate, hadn't realized that! now that you mention, yeah he did look young, makes sense.potter wrote:Remember that Kennedy was only 19/20 when we won that double. so equate that to our kids now and it's not surprising that he missed a few.
nicklas bentdner would have not only missed those chances but would've gotten in charlie george's way for the winning goal

I'm delighted to discover that I'm not the only one who thinks Charlie George is overrated. Radford was a better player and did so much more for us. People have mentioned his talent but I'll always remember he was a hard worker as well.
Great shout from potter about George Armstrong. My first footballing hero and one of the most underrated players ever. If you look up his stats you'll be amazed. For me he had everything.

radford and kennedy were absolutely awesome in the year we first won the double (which in those days was considered an extraordinary feat) and considered one of the top striking partnershipsChippy wrote:This is bizarre because Charlie George did fuck all apart from score the goal in the FA Cup final. kennedy doesn't get the recognition he should as he was sold to liverpool and improved, as a midfield player, way beyond the expectation of most, becoming an england regular and winning pretty much every trophy with them
both are true afc legends
Is it me or those old guys from the 70's seem to have some 'X' factor about them?Their direct football was a joy to watch!.
ANd the Finnishing!
Compare P Storey with A Song.
Storey:Good touch, neat, technical player -simply wins balls and passes it on to Sammels,George, Armstrong, etc.
Song: such a long winded style 8/9 touches of the ball, then tries to nutmeg opp, uses backside, thighs to fend off tackles -then tries an impossible pass from deep.Fouls opps for fun.
Now lets compare Chamack with Radford..
